Has Obama visited Kenya as POTUS?

OP says it all.

If not, is it on the cards? Very interested to see how he would be received.

Believe it or not, Wikipedia has a list of every country he’s visited since he was elected. Obama been to Africa twice since he was elected and has not gone to Kenya. He was in Egypt in June 2009 and went to Ghana the following month. Very few trips for 2011 and 2012 have been finalized, but so far, they don’t include Kenya.

Not since birth.

O’Bama was POTUS at birth? :smack: Now I know why he won’t show his Birth Certificate. It’s not that he wasn’t born in Hawaii. It’s that he was just born and isn’t Constitutionally old enough (35) to be President. :dubious: Case closed.

While he hasn’t actually been to Kenya, I have heard a lot of anecdotal evidence about how much Africans love Obama, so I strongly he would EXTREMELY well-received there. Someone I recently met served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo from 2008 to earlier this year, and she told me that people tended to assume she was French - and Togolese hate Nicolas Sarkozy. She was walking down the street, and a guy spat in her path and said, “Sarkozy!” to her. She shook her head and said “Obama!”. And the guy hugged her.

/anecdote!!!

Ta.

I am pretty sure he went to Kenya as a senator.

As a Peace Corps volunteer living in Kenya, I can tell you he would be VERY well received as he is well-loved. Usually the first thing out of people’s mouths when they learn I’m American is “Ahhh, Obama!” or “Do you know Obama?” or “Obama is my cousin!”. All the folks here seem to be related to him. Strange.

I have heard the joke in Kenya is that a Luo can become President of the US more easily than President of Kenya.

Heh. That’s probably true. Luos in general have a bit of a reputation (read stereotype) here that apparently wasn’t helped by Obama’s father.

Don’t they have a beer named after him?

Odd statement, considering that Odinga was considered for the first presidency of Kenya, and was the first vice-president. Luos lost out to Kikuyus in terms of political influence and power, in part because of the split between Odinga and Kenyatta, but I have trouble believing that there’s a perception of them being shiftless or lazy. Of course, that could be a characterization adopted by KANU politicians to disparage their rivals.

The reputation I’m referring to is not “shiftless and lazy”. All of the tribes in Kenya have their own generalizations for each other, and as far as I know, none have that one.

The Luo stereotype falls more along the lines of “sex-crazed”, “hard-partying”, and not treating women well. I stated that Obama’s father’s rep was that of a brilliant man, but also that of an alcoholic and a womanizer, which only helps perpetuate the belief about Luos in general.

But really, the biggest hurdle has less to do with tribe and more with gender. Many Kenyan women are pretty fed up.

I haven’t seen any yet, but I’ll ask around…

I suspect he’s in no hurry to go as it would give the Birthers a whole new stock of ammunition with little actual benefit to Obama. He’ll go once he’s out of office unless a genuine diplomatic reason arises before then.

Thanks for the explanation/correction.
