Especially since SCOTUS overturned the sodomy laws, I have had the perception that more and more new posters were registering and posting mostly in the threads about homosexuality. Posting to the negative, and in the pit especially, delighting it seems in being as hateful as they can be.
In GD they seem to parrot the same terms over and over again:
It is tiring. I can only imagine what it must be like for the mods, and they have my sincerest condolences for how this adds to a workload they recieve no compensation for.

I wondered the same thing here, Mockingbird. What in the world is going on and how are we all supposed to come up with the kind of intestinal fortitude needed to beat that type of overwhelming ignorant crap? It IS very tiring, especially to those who are on the front lines, day in, day out, and never seem to give up.
I don’t know but I’m inclined to agree with you that there is a remarkable conglomeration of bigoted idiots who just need to share their opinions on homosexuality on the boards at this point in time. And it’s not just in GD.
Forgive me Mockingbird. Being an Australian sometimes we share different colloquial idioms. Was “lifestyle” the wrong word to use? Have I done something wrong? Sorry if I did. No intentions along those lines.
Actually, yeah. They do seem rather thick on the ground of late.
Possibly it’s just a matter of perception. I started a thread on homophobia recently, and since then I’ve been noticing an awful lot of people trying to justify their prejudices against gays.
But then, at one point in my life, I acquired a VW minibus, and it seemed like every third car on the road was a VW minibus. I was thinking about them more, so I noticed them more.
So I don’t know…But yeah, it sure does seem to be Homophobes ‘R’ Us around here lately.
Just to back Boo Boo Foo up, I immediately saw he didn’t mean what Mockingbird read. If that makes sense. Maybe it’s an issue in the gay community here (and if it is, I’m all ears ). I have only learnt from the boards here why it is so damned irritating and wrong to refer to the homosexual lifestyle.
On preview that looks incoherent but the breeder lifestyle has ensured I got 4 hours sleep last night and it’s not pretty round here.
It’s cyclical. They seem to come in waves. I don’t think the current batch are much different than our earlier batches. Plus, it’s summer, when all the kids are bored and have too much free time.
What’s this “all the kids” gibberish? Why is it we teenage hooligans get blamed for pretty much any ruckus that ever gets called? We aren’t the ones whose intolerant viewpoints are currently attempting to ban gay marriage, pass Patriot Acts, et al… so why are we blamed here?
Because the percentage of normal Dopers vs. trolls seems to increase significantly during the summer months, when all the kiddies are home from school. Some assume that most of these trolls are just bored kids.
I noticed it too. It does go in waves, but I think this one is due in part to all the media attention. Bush, the supreme court, and the pope are all talking about it so it’s on people’s minds. It probably irritates the people who don’t want to think about it at all, so they come here to bitch about it.
At least here there’s people around to set a counter-example, but it is frustrating to see people bringing up tired arguments that have been debated here a thousand times already. After a while it gets pointless though, because I think most of them are not here to debate, they just want to spew.
Well seeing our war dodging, spoiled rich kid, environment destroying, economy ruining, tax-cut for the wealthy pusher, lying about Iraq POS president has added homophobe to his list of “accomplishments” I guess some people now feel emboldened to reveal their ignorance in all its glory. So much for the separation of church and state. . .
I guess “compassionate conservatism” only applies to straight white rich folks of the “correct” religion who are willing to make frequent donations to the GOP machine.
I don’t see too many thread titles that say, “gays and lesbians should hide the closet,” or “All gays burn in HELL.” I do see quite a few threads that start “open letter to homophobes I’ve known,” and “ask the gay guy” and “ask the lesbian.”
Bigots (or attention seeking fake bigots) do see these as big targets to throw out some hate-laced language and watch the fireworks. These threads are like an invitation to those who have a few choice phrases to post whether they believe them or not. Hey if you build it they will come.
But what’s the purpose of starting these threads if not to debate and educate? I find reading these to be quite educational. Granted there will be your standard idiots who throw garbage out there, but they should be ignored. By responding they are only encouraged.
Also in the OP you refer to a “bigot posse.” I am a newbie. I have taken a contrary position in one (now 2) homosexuality themed threads. I recently made the mistake of using the word “lifestyle” while making a point in a post.
