Has the "Day without immigrants" affected you?

If so, how?

Here in SW Oklahoma, I have noticed no difference whatsoever. Even though the day is still young, I don’t anticipate anything remarkable.

For those outside of the US that haven’t heard about it, here it is.

Nope, not in the slightest. It did seem that traffic was lighter than usual on my way to work, not sure if that was because of the protests or not though.

It seems that most of the protests/rallies what have you are mostly downtown LA (the miracle mile) so I didn’t really expect to be affected.

About 90% of the construction workers rehabbing my building are gone. It’s very peaceful here today. Also, the subway was less crowded.

Washington, DC for those counting.

Nope. Not so far.

I work in downtown LA and I haven’t noticed anything different… we’ll see about lunch time though.

Not in the least. Some of my students noticed that the “Mexican tables” in the lunch area were deserted before school, but I haven’t lost a single student all day.

My favorite pizza place was closed. We walked a block over to Mimi’s and had lunch. Does that count?

I work in suburban Columbus, Ohio. I haven’t noticed anything different. I have seen several of my Hispanic immigrant coworkers today.

yes! I live 2 blocks south of Wilshire (the major street where the LA protesters will be marching down) and they closed down that street and some of the streets alongside it. All I can say is traffic is going to be hellish so I ended up taking the subway to work, which added about 15 more mins to my commute time (cause i have to walk far for the stops), but in actually this might be a good thing because the subway/walking is so much more pleasant than driving!

Once I get home, i’m not planning to leave the house at all because of the street closures/traffic.

I didn’t see any protests on the way to work, so no.

P.S.: I’m an immigrant.

My lead didn’t come in today, which is sucky, 'cause our super told us there was gonna be a whole lot coming down the pipe today. Fortunately though, I can’t do my part of the job until he does his first, so mostly I’m sitting around being very bored.

Well, damn. I didn’t take a day off. Then again, I don’t disagree with tougher laws for illegal immigrants.

The Wife rides a commuter train in each morning. She catches it at the start of the line, from a town with large hispanic population. She said only minimal effect on the crowd, of course she rides in at 6:30 am, so she might have beat it. Her PM ride home will be worse, she rides home just as the rally downtown is scheduled to be ending.

Where I went to lunch, the staff is usually about 90% hispanic. Today, it looked like the blond/blue eyed convention was in town, so they obviously took a hit, but the full compliment was there, so maybe it was just rescheduling people. Service didn’t suffer and my hot dog was perfect.

I work in downtown L.A… A lot of the restaurants have reduced staff or are closed and my co-workers are currently in my office straining to see the throng of people walking along Broadway.

My fiancee works on Wilshire where there wil be a massive demonstration, so they are letting folks go home around 1 o’clock. Personally I have not noticed a thing.

Ninety-nine percent of the people in the fab shops here are immigrants. Everyone showed up today.

Yes. The drive to work was unusually smooth .

Aside from having to cross Market St through a BART station rather than just walking across, no particular impact.

I beleive everone working in this building has been subjected to federal background checks. It’s probably pretty hard to be here illegally and pass one of those checks.

It’s a nice sunny day here and I’ve been putzing in the yard. It’s so nice & peaceful without the leaf blowers going off & on throughout the day. When they show up both I, and the cat have to run inside & hide, it’s so fricking loud. It’s still a bit early though, and they could still show up and ruin my buzz.

Even the cat seems calmer today.

The usual complement of day labors was standing outside the mission. The taco joint downstairs in my building was open. I saw open taco trucks. The dude that cuts grass for a bunch of my neighbors was out and about doing his Monday thing. I don’t work in the agricultural field, so I don’t know if the pickers showed up today or not.

I’m sure that plenty of students didn’t attend school today–easy for them to protest when they have little to lose.

None of the stores that I shop at were closed; I don’t know if the local bodegas closed down.

No impact on me, maybe a slight impact on the community as a whole, probably an impact on the ag owners if they lost their pickers today.
