I remember it happening a few times with Cecil’s columns. Jimmy DeKnight replied to column about “Rock Around the Clock”, Don McLean to one about “American Pie”, and that Key guy to one about his claims that advertisements were cesspools of sexual perversion (that caused us to buy products). Have similar things happened on this board?
We have had a few over the years as I recall. But I don’t remember who or when.
I’m thinking a very long time ago, Weird Al might have been one.
More frequently, people have posted claiming to be the subject’s descendant.
I identified a story by Paul Levinson and he replied to the thread
There was a thread where someone (Johnny_LA probably) was looking for an obscure short movie. The director did reply. I can’t find the thread.
Brian
JMS dropped in to a Babylon 5 thread once. It was amazing!
Way back in 2002 FriarTed started a thread titled Screaming Boy Preacher 10 yrs ago?. It was resurrected numerous times over the years. In December 2011 one of preacher’s sons made a post. His handle was draddard. It is post #53. He wasn’t one of the preacher children (the preacher children were his half-siblings), so I’m not sure if it “counts.” But thought it was interesting none-the-less.
It happens in the Pit all the time.
Was that in a message board thread though? I remember in one of the Straight Dope books they printed a column that Cecil wrote about Key, followed by a letter Key wrote in response.
I remember that, and I don’t even have to check my memory for this: In reference to the kid holding a bible to the side of his head to better project his voice, one of those posts called it “half a holy megaphone.”
I (possibly falsely) recall that Phil Plait, author of the awesome book “Bad Astronomy,” posted here but I am not sure if that was in response to conversation about his book.
Some jerk also threatened a law suit when he was described negatively. I won’t post his name just in case TPTB are still insanely paranoid about that kind of thing.
Phil was actually an active poster here in the early days of the SDMB, even before he published his first book, but he hasn’t been here since 2004. Here’s his profile:
I seem to recall a post by an author of a book about a boat that could go directly downwind but faster than the wind. It’s been a while so I may be wrong.
In a thread about Mormonism, the discussion about Mormons not using the cross came up and a scholar registered and posted. He had recently published a book about the subject.
