And I think you’ve found an opportunity here in ATMB to support JOSH’s agenda without dipping a toe in the pit. Not everyone finds eternal damnation quite so mundane.
Take this discussion to GD or the Pit, please - or just let it go.
Point taken, I stand corrected. But to the rest non bolded, to be honest Marley, she went off tangent only when challenged, was only responding to attacking posters. Like you, I am also unsurprised that other posters weren’t able to ignore the comment, but I think they should have. It just seems like yet another harmless opinion that someone is entitled to and nothing to get upset about. Or if reason to be upset, take it to another thread right away rather than disrupt the current one.
Okay, will drop the topic now.
I agree with that. It was a joke at our new friends expense. If JOSH had seen it there would have been a derailment I’m sure. But JOSH was not in the thread. The joke wasn’t particularly mean-spirited. I have no problem with it being moderated. But the degree of moderation seemed excessive (nice oxymoron there, excessive moderation).
I disagree. I think it’s perfectly possible for a mod considering a warning to drop a note into the thread telling the poster their post was over the line and will be discussed in the mod loop, then later follow up with either a warning or a brief note that the consensus view was that the mod note was sufficient. As a short-term exercise, it doesn’t seem that onerous to me.
I was all in favor of criticizing twickster in the last thread that came up here (and I thought for a moment this might have been that thread and just got bumped, based on the number of posts it had).
But twickster made the right call this time and I have absolutely no problem with the tone of her moderation. It sounded exactly like every other mod note/warning I’ve seen.
It certainly wasn’t a backhanded asshole comment like she pulled off before.
I actually like Twickster’s Moderating. And she was correct here.
But I make a plea for mercy to have the Warning downgraded to a Note. This was very obscure and you really have to be ‘in the know” to understand why Moderation was called for.
One of the problems is that people don’t like hypocrisy, and you have a moderator who has repeatedly broken the rules that she so aggressively enforces against other posters.
While there may have been some super secret moderator’s eyes only consequences for Twickster’s breaches, the perception is that she was able to get away with it.
For her then to throw around warnings and terms like ‘jerk’ for far more innocuous breaches than her own is galling.
The poster knew what it meant, though. That’s how in-jokes were.
No matter how galled you choose to be, we’ve been telling posters “don’t be a jerk” pretty much since forever.
This seems like a funny thing to object to.
Sure, I agree that there are probably more tactful ways of saying ‘you fucked up again and we are probably going to ban you’, but seriously, what’s the point?
If one objection to twickster’s modding is she isn’t all hearts and flowers to people who are not going to be around long anyway, that doesn’t strike me as a serious flaw.
That having been said, I have never heard of James Otto, and spotted his number 1 fan as someone who is being irritating on the boards, not necessarily by accident, and saw the moderation incident in question as an effort to keep people from taking cheap shots in CS. No matter if the object of the cheap shot is looking to get on people’s nerves anyway.
I don’t get the twickster hate, so maybe I don’t see the same context as others do.

Shodan
Not to point any fingers in this thread, but where do I post a thread to bitch about all the whiners who are making ATMB threads about seemingly every single mod note that gets written?
I’m verklempt. I think such a thread needs lots of profanity, but I don’t see how it can avoid discussing board issues, and the Pit doesn’t allow that and ATMB doesn’t allow the necessary profanity.
I believe we need a new forum.
It must really suck to have someone holding a gun to your head forcing you to open and read threads you don’t want to. Maybe on your next potty break you can sneak out the window and run to the police station. I do suggest pulling your pants up first because apparantly the police don’t take too kindly to folk who run into their station with their ding-dongs hanging out swaying to and fro.
Why can’t you Pit the posters who are annoying you? How is that against the rules?
Yeah it seems a little weird to have the number 1 rule be “Don’t be a jerk” and then prohibit mods from using the word jerk. Its clear, concise and it works. I have no problem with her language in the post. I just think it was way too mild an infraction to warrant a warning and a review of posting privledges.
Oh sure - NOW you tell me.

Shodan
The Pit.
Because the mods all need some more work.
It’s not that I can’t Pit them. It’s that discussing the reasons for the pitting are likely to also include discussions of moderator actions and board issues, which aren’t supposed to be there.
…okay: to be crystal clear here: are these posts in this thread where the same poster is being openly mocked outside of the pit (including mocking by a moderator) deserving of infractions?
No. It’s a little unreasonable to expect an ATMB thread about signoffs and signatures to have no jokes about signatures.
You’ve missed my point (perhaps because I haven’t phrased it very well). It is galling to see a moderator warn a poster for being a jerk, when that same moderator has been guilty of the same infractions without seeming to have been disciplined herself.
It strikes me that she is very quick to fire off a warning to others, but doesn’t practice what she preaches. I don’t think this is a reasonable trait in a moderator.
