Hatin' on Deanna Troi

Man, that George Takei could ACT, couldn’t he?

There was one episode where it showed Data manning the bridge during third shift since he doesn’t have to sleep. They could have been relying on their android to pick up their slack in that regard.

This actually would have made a lot more sense. In the future I imagine lawsuits will be completely out of control, so I am sure alien species will all be trying to sue us. So basically Deanna would cut into Picard/alien conversations all the time with stuff like,

“Don’t answer that question.”
“Tell him you can neither confirm nor deny those rumors.”
“Before we help them they will need to sign these waivers and indemnity contracts.”

Then Picard would need to assign ship’s lawyer and ship’s notary to the away teams.

I agree – later Troi was better than early Troi.

To be fair, the final episode of Enterprise had no place in the final episode of Enterprise.

It was pretty laughable, however, that she and Riker were supposed to be Troi-And-Riker-During-A-TNG-Episode, given that they clearly looked 20 years older (and like they had made about that many visits to the buffet line in the last day or two…)

I’m pretty sure there’s no such thing as a lawyer in the Star Trek universe. Else, the manufacturers of holodecks would have been sued into oblivion years ago.

No, they gave Riker a beard. It ain’t the same thing.

Nope, they have lawyers in Trek. Kirk has one in Court Martial and Riker acts as Data’s in that one where someone wanted to disassemble him.

That would be a great idea. A series based on the “second shift” of the Enterprise, with their own separate encounters and adventures and what-have-you.

STNG-Night Shift

In one episode of DS9, Quark makes guests agree to some insanely comprehensive waiver of damages before allowing them in his home. I think the implication is that in the civilized Federation, people just hug and get over it whenever they have a dispute, and all the surplus lawyers became logicians or geishas or something.

Oh, dear sweet God, I know. What kills me is Worf and I otherwise have similar taste in women. Dax is a dreamboat, and I could go for K’Ehleyr, head ridges and all–but Troi? That was like a personal slap in the face. Even if she deep throats, swallows, and growls all at the same time, it just isn’t worth it.

Okay, Kirk had an actual lawyer, but it’s clear that the profession was outlawed between TOS and TNG. Your second example helps prove my case. Seriously, look at that situation: “We’re putting you on trial to determine your status as a sentient being. If you lose, we get to chop you up for spare parts. What’s that? A lawyer? What would you need a lawyer for? Sorry, best we can do is this guy who, uh… does something on a starship. We’re not sure what. Plus he’s got a beard! Okay, let’s get going. Court’s in session!”

In space, no one can hear you litigate.

They should have booted Troi off the ship after about the third time she was possessed by an alien. You’d have to take everything she said with a grain of salt. “We should follow Troi’s advice. Unless, of course, she’s currently possessed. Does her voice sound a little deeper than usual this morning? Somebody get on the intercom and ask anyone who’s been seduced or attacked by Counselor Troi today to report immediately to the Ready Room.”

Bingo.

As I remember it, in her first scene (of two), she has exactly three lines:

“What?”
What???
and
“Who the fuck was that?”

The hearing was taking place at a Starbase where the JAG (a lawyer) had recently arrived and didn’t have a staff yet. There was also a TNG episode where the Enterprise had to convince human colonists to evacuate because some insanely legalese obsessed race had treaty rights to the planet. It was mentioned that several hundred “Federation legal experts” had negotiated the treaty.

No I think they just hit their budget limit for the episode so they made Riker do it. Surely the Ferengi have lawyers.

The Ferengi are not members of the Federation, so the Feds probably wouldn’t use them anyway.

Yep.

Nerd nitpick: Riker was the prosecutor, arguing in favor of turning Data over to the jackass scientist who wanted to take him apart. During the hearing, Riker reached down and shut off Data’s power, and then went back to his seat and brooded. Picard was the defense, arguing for Data.

She talked?

I hope it’s been obvious that I’ve been joking in my “No Star Trek lawyers” arguments, but honestly, that’s just about the lamest excuse for a plot contrivance I’ve ever heard. And since we’re talking Star Trek, that’s saying something! They’re having a hearing about revoking Data’s legal identity as a person, and they can’t just put the trial on hold until they ship some paralegals in from Betelgeuse? And everyone, including the defendent, is okay with this? “Hey, Data, we don’t have any lawyers to work on your defence. How vested are you in the idea of having someone with actual legal expertise argue that you should be granted more civil rights than a microwave oven?”

Man, I hate Star Trek.

This is completely not related to the topic but can anyone explain to me the whole Dr Pulaski thing? I know that Gates McFadden got pregnant during the show and I guess she left for that reason but the references I found about Muldaur suggests she left because of problems with her personally - what was that about?

On Troi, personally I liked her but not in a sexual way as I’m gay. But then I was only 10 when TNG started and 16 when it finished so I probably didn’t have the breadth and depth of experience necessary to work out quite why she was so bad as the rest of you have.
