Hats off to the Trotters fans!

I can’t believe that 3,000 hardy Bolton fans made the trek to Burgas in Bulgaria for the UEFA Cup match against little known Lokomotiv Plovdiv. I’ve seen the team a few times “live” on cable this season, and it was all I could do to raise myself out of the torpor into which their play had sent me to make the trek to the telly to turn it off.

Wanderers fans, you all deserve a Kevin Davies knockdown.

For some odd reason, everywhere I go I meet someone from Bolton - except perhaps Bolton itself, where everyone is from Pakistan or maybe Lancashire. And they all seem to be very pleasant people with a ready sense of humour (think Peter Kay).

Bolton itself is, I am sorry to say, a bit of a shithole. And that probably explains why there were so many Boltonians at last night’s game: they simply wanted to get away from Bolton for a couple of days. By comparison, Bulgaria is a veritable paradise!

Been to Bolton much? I have lived in several areas of the country, Whalley Range (Manchester), Edgbaston (Birmingham) and Salford Quays (Manchester again), and my current home of Horwich (Bolton) is the nicest of the bunch.

Sorry if I offended anyone from Bolton. I lived in Heaton Chapel for 3 years, working in central Manchester (opposite the bus station in Cholton Street) and my work took me all over the North West including Great Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and bits of Derbyshire. I visited Bolton on about 5 or 6 occasions.

It wasn’t the absolute worst place in my patch: I’d probably say somewhere in Merseyside took that title. But it was no Macclesfield or Grange-over-Sands.
