Have Falwell and Robertson commented on the tsunami?

The “respectable” televangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson have said some wacko things about past natural disasters being punishment for sinful behavior. Have these two mainstream Christian preachers had much to say about the tsunami disasters?

In a similar vein, I saw Colophon’s thread about the bigoted comments on Pbase.

Please tell me you’re joking?

Falwell and Robertson? Mainstream?

Whoohoo!!! Another ‘Let’s blame those damned Christians’ thread! Unfortunately, Robertson’s charity 'Operation Blessing doesn’t seem to be cooperating with the OP:

Oh, please. Given what has been said in the past, the OP’s question was a perfectly reasonable one to ask.

What exactly did the OP blame on Christians? Did you actually somehow read it as blaming the tsunami on Christians? If not, then what?

Utter nonsense. The OP referenced two specific individuals with an unfortunate track record of shooting off their mouths. It was in no way an indictment against Christians.

What was it Falwell said, that a hurricane in Florida was God’s punishment for Disney World “allowing” Gay Day? I take it that’s what the OP is alluding to.

Is this a pre-pitting?

Ya. Sure.

Operation Blessing also helped out after 9/11, so them helping and his mouthing of ignorance are not necessarily mutually exclusive. As as aside, Operation Blessing is not without issues. It’s one of the faith-based charities that now receive government funding. The largest grant given out by Operation Blessing in 2001 was over $2 million dollars and it went to, wait for it, the CBN! Yes, his charity helps pay for his broadcast network. This is why many of us have issues with the whole “faith-based” initiative.

A quick Google search finds no stupid, hateful or unChristian quotes from either of those two/thirds of the Axis of Evil-- as of yet.

Let me take the time to congratulate Robertson Operation Blessing for actually following Christ’'s commandment to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the afflicted.

Oh, I am certainly not blaming either Falwell or Robertson, or any other Christians for the Asian tsunami.

Why is the OP asking in this forum unless the OP was purposely looking for something to get upset about?

“I want to vent some self-righteous outrage to demonstrate I’m a caring person with a finer degree of morality than most religions. Please post any dumb-ass tsunami comments you’ve collected in the last week here, so I can work myself into a lather about it.”

Ding ding ding!

I wonder if he’d also accept quotes from “mainstream” Republicans like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh?

FWIW, that was Robertson – and the hurricane threatening the Orlando area veered north and hit Virginia Beach (Robertson’s HQ) instead.

Yeah – while some lenience in character description is traditionally allowed in the Pit, AskNott, characterizing those two televangelists as “mainstream” is stretching it some. Even many Southern Baptists and Pentecostals (Falwell’s and Robertson’s affiliations, IIRC) have disavowed some of their more outré comments. (BTW, I typoed “vomments” for that last word, and thought seriously about leaving it. ;))

Perhaps, but what does that have to do with my question to Brutus, asking him what he thinks the OP blamed Christians for? Did you quote my question on accident, or is there a connection I’m not seeing?

Still curious btw, Brutus. What exactly did the OP blame on Christians?

I think that was Pat Robertson, not Falwell. But who the fuck cares which one said it right ? As long as we can slam “mainstream” Christion preachers for their beliefs. That is so much more important, because we don’t want them or their ilk to be respected for anything let alone for their major role in contributing to relief efforts in Southeast Asia.

Still hungover? The OP is all worried about these two characters saying goofy things, then claims that they are * mainstream Christian preachers*. Not exactly a narrow brush. Why? I don’t know; The OP seems to suffer from some odd need to paint Christians in a negative light, no matter how convoluted the circumstances.

Just look at the number of ‘OMG LOOK AT TEH CHRISTIANS!#@!!’ threads lately. Maybe you could tell me why people feel the need constantly attack Christians?

So kudos to Robertson for doing something right.

Now if he’d only consider applying the teachings of Y’shua bar Miriam to his behavior toward others…

Because, while not blaming christians, the OP is obviously fishing for an excuse to start a thread that will inevitably head that way.

I’ve no axe to grind here. There are idiots of all sorts and all beliefs in the world. But do we really need yet another thread using this disaster as an excuse for belief point scoring, particularly when the OP doesn’t even have a point to start from and has to come begging for one?
