I read somewhere that the supermarket food products sold very poorly.
Not surprising. I wouldn’t have heard of it if I hadn’t seen his name on something over near the Thai peanut sauce last week.
I would not cross the line to conman. He has monetized charity by making videos, but I don’t have any data suggesting anyone was tricked or swindled.
Yes, there is a recent sexual discrimination and harassment stuff, but that seems to go along with the incompetence I mentioned earlier. His company really is like a set of frat bros. And things have to actually go wrong in practice before he and his company will correct.
Yeah, he licensed a burger to ghost kitchens—one of the first to do so. He also sells the MrBeast sauce on said burgers separately. (It’s ketchup, mustard, mayo, and pickles blended together. Like so many others, but he flat out says it.) And he created a chocolate bar making it all one sheet, and didn’t test the boxes, so they all tended to fall out easily and break.
That’s correct. I’m on a local Facebook grocery bargain site, and short-dated Mr. Beast snack products are literally a dime a dozen (I am exaggerating only slightly). It’s not like there’s no competition, KWIM?
I’ve heard of him but not sought out his videos.
I first heard of Mr. Beast a few years ago and was surprised to learn just how big he really was. It was one of those moments were I had to wonder if I was out of touch but quickly decided it was the youths who were out of touch.
I first heard of him quite some time ago. I think originally from this.
So, I guess a year-and-a-half ago.
There was also some chatter about his controversial burger franchise around that time as well. I may have heard about him because of that before the Coffeezilla investigation, I’m not 100% sure.
But then later, my own daughter became a fan, because she watches YouTube. Though, she’s not a huge fan or anything… She seemed to like him for like a month (enough that she even asked us to get her one of his branded candy bars at the grocery store once) but then apparently got bored and moved on. I haven’t seen him watch any of his stuff for a long time or heard her bring him up. She’s 11 for what it’s worth.
I’ve heard of him, but like several others, know very little about him.
Two-plus years ago, I was working with a young man at the ad agency where I was employed at the time, who was part of our media team, and who was a huge MrBeast fan. I learned a bit about the guy from my co-worker, who was trying to pitch doing something with MrBeast to one of our clients. Frankly, it wasn’t a good fit for that client, and I had the sense that my co-worker was trying overly hard to justify a contact with his favorite social media personality.
Nope. And no interest in knowing anything about him.
Yeah I’ve heard of him, and the stupidly large piles of cash he’s acquired from his videos. I’ve no idea how he managed it, or even seen one of his videos
Absolutely the same here. I curate my YouTube feed fairly carefully, just so that crap like that doesn’t show up in it.
And now that I have heard of him, thanks to this thread and the post from a couple of weeks ago, I know enough to 86 the channel right away, if it ever pops up.
Only due to Survivor.
I only know him from the one video that was recommended to me a few months ago, where he did some sort of American Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course. It seemed “fine”; nothing too special but nothing controversial either. I watched a few minutes and then went back to engineering videos about bridges and dams. He was never recommended to me again.
Now, learning about his fame and shenanigans in this thread, I’ll probably never watch any of his other videos.
I guess I fundamentally don’t understand the draw of these types of “creators”… they just seem like modern-day Jackass derivatives. Is that the whole point, rage-baiting?
The folks I follow on YouTube are all nerds… engineers, scientists, physicists, historians, EV reviewers, etc. And cat videos, of course. I guess there’s a whole darker side of YouTube that I’m never exposed to.
Well, how he got so many viewers mystifies me but not the piles of cash. When you have 479 million subscribers, it’s like a cash geyser.
Here’s a shorter video with a similar angle:
I also heard about him rather late (couple of years ago), which was my realization that there’s essentially a whole sector of the economy that I basically know nothing about nor take part in. Also, seeing his thumbnails with that creepy grin and the completely mirthless eyes makes me wonder if the drive to exaggerated expression to increase engagement actually skews the emotional palette in real life with people effectively overacting their own emotions ![]()
If you look at any “reaction” video, it’s all overacting so awful as to shame a late-night commercial for some Kitchen-magic® Vegewhiz™.
Hell yes we’re collectively teaching ourselves to overact. And with selfies we’ve been teaching ourselves to be narcissistic for 20+ years now.
Excuse me, I need to go chase some kids off my lawn. Haaaruumph!
Heard the name. Couldn’t pick him out of a lineup of one.
I have Gen Alpha kids, so, yes, I heard of him, and a few years ago now (pre-Covid). Even without the kids, I’ve come across him on YouTube randomly, and I see his Beast bars or whatever he calls his chocolate at the 7-Eleven all the time. I’ve seen probably a dozen or so of his videos. I didn’t really mind him at first.
The famous YouTube star that I know nearly nothing about is PewDiePie. I think it’s past his heyday (maybe?) but at one time he was the biggest YouTuber, and I had never heard of him outside of the fact that he was the biggest YouTuber. I’m a general knowledge kind of guy, so I like to keep up on pop culture, sports, music, etc. as well as more serious stuff, but I was surprised someone that Internet big had completely flown under my radar.
I’ve heard of him and his Beast Games, but I don’t think I’ve ever watched a Youtube video from a “famous” Youtuber.
Pretty much. And most of that I learned here.
I only know Pewdiepie because they got namechecked on The Good Place (and not in a good way), but my daughter has been a fan of JackSepticEye’s vids for a while and she dragged me to see Markiplier’s film Iron Lung (which I enjoyed and which has a cameo from JackSepticEye in it) so I am aware of their work.
I only know about JackSepticEye and Markiplier because I read the Wikipedia page for the video game “Dispatch”.
