Have humans always, um, uh..................

…wiped themselves after a movement.

Was there ever a time when people would just pull their pants up and go back to whatever they were doing prior?

In India, most people don’t wipe themselves at all. They rinse with water, using their left hand. Which is why the eat using only the right hand, although most also wash their hands in the nearest sink when they are finished (some water closets don’t even have a sink - only a toilet, and then a small tap or shower attachment and a bucket, so they use the kitchen sink to wash their hands).

Well, this begs the question. You gotta use the right hand to wash the left one, right? Including picking out the left hand fingernails with the right hand fingernails, so both have gotta be contaminated.

Unless, they’ve perfected the method of washing with only one hand, in which case I gotta ask the follow-up question. Do they have the “what does the sound of one hand clapping sound like?” question in India.

I don’t mean to be culturally insensitive, but friggin’ EEEEEEEWWWWWWW!!!

Here in Korea (I swear, I’m gonna make that my sig one of these days) most bathrooms have (or, at least, are supposed to have) TP… but there is almost never any soap! WFT? What is the use of washing your hands without the soap, I ask??

Here in Malaysia, many public bathrooms have no TP (though some have tissue for sale.) They usually have a hose there too. I have gotten used to always carrying tissue with me (though not the tipical roll, just a small pack fo Kleenx type).

In Morocco many toilets have a built-in tap so you can rinse with water rather than wiping with paper. I think it might be a Muslim thing (which would tie in with India and Malaysia as well).

Cecil Adams What did people use before toilet paper was invented?

A recent related thread.

Washing is a lot cleaner than wiping. Soap is necessary afterwards, though, no question about it.

To be quite honest, I think the Indian method is a hell of a lot cleaner than the toilet paper method. I mean how clean can that area possibly get by just using toilet paper. But if you used water and cleaned thoroughly, and then washed your hands with soap, you’d be infinitely cleaner than you are now. (For the fellas) Just think, if there were two identically gorgeous females and one used toilet paper and other used water and soap, which one would you give a tossed salad to? I think I’ve made my point.

My fearful question is, after they sluice off with hand and water, then how do they dry their a**es or do they wear those baggy pants for that reason? Do they wash their hands and dry both butt and hands on same towel? Do they kind of stand there, in the breeze and air dry as it runs down their legs?

Should tourists start wearing rubber gloves over there if shaking hands?

Um, how well do those fixing food actually wash? If I visit India, will they let me in wearing a full body biohazard suit?

I don’t think they actually touch anything with their left hand (at least the intent is to not touch anything). IIRC, the washing with the left hand is really more like splashing water onto the “dirty” area with the left hand-- the hand isn’t actually rubbing the dirty area to clean it off.
