post and play
No question that not only is something broken, but it’s broken in a very peculiar and inconsistent way whereby certain tricks that let a video post sometimes work and sometimes don’t, with no apparent rhyme or reason.
I’m going to try posting a video again that no longer works with the “youtu.be” form of URL and appended slash, this time appending the share option:
Nope, but adding the slash at the end (w/o parentheses) still seems to work for me:
ETA to my post above, which I can’t edit: It worked, but only with a slash appended after “?feature=share”.
Again, that’s a Onebox link, not an embedded video.
Oh right… it won’t play right there within the thread, instead opens a new tab or window and plays there.
Test to see if the problem is with my work computer and operating system or my home computer and operating system.
Test 2:
My Test video with Dr. Fauci I did on my iPhone using Safari (iOS 16.3). Just pasted the YouTube link into the post, hit Enter to create a blank line after the link, and that was it. Video embedded just fine.
My Test 2 video with the accent expert I attempted to do from a Win 10 Pro laptop running the latest version of Chrome. Pasting a bare YouTube link didn’t work. Had to type in a forward slash after the link to get the video to at least appear in a window as seen above.
The second part of my test. This time I’m using my home computer.
Something weird happened while I was in this thread. I watched two videos (the SDMB one and the adorable dog one from @wolfpup). Then as I was reading through the rest of the thread, both of them started playing again at the same time. I had to go up through the thread to find and stop them. I’ve never had that happen after watching videos in the past.
Just another test, and the youtu.be link with slash at the end is working again (above).
This is a very frustrating intermittent bug and I hope it’s been reported and someone is trying to fix it.
I have had this happen. Generally, it was videos I’d watched a little bit of, paused, and moved on. It was very annoying, but I found that if I was done with a video, I refreshed the browser window, the problem went away.
I thought one of the issues addressed in the latest Discourse “fix” was this issue of paused videos starting to play.
Just happened to me, too. If I put the media link in directly following whatever I’ve written, Discourse allows it. But if I hit ENTER and do a paragraph return and try to have it as a freestanding link (so that people can see the YouTube graphic, for instance), I get the error message, “An error occurred: Sorry, you can’t embed media items in a post.”
Grrr.
I had one work for me this morning. But most don’t.
It’s a bug, pure and simple. Happens or not for what’re effectively random unfathomable reasons. But seems to happen almost always rather than almost never. Damn.
Whether anyone is working to address it is a different question.
Posting from a platform which uses a mobile OS, like a phone or an iPad, seems to be the most reliable. That’s how I was able to post this.
