Have Nexus 7 Tablet - Now What?

I inherited my late father’s Nexus 7 tablet. I’m not entirely sure what to do with it. There are a couple of games on it that are OK time-wasters when I’ve got 5-10 minutes to kill. It web-surfs. I gather dad mostly used it for the games and for facebook/e-mail/surfing just based on what’s on it. Oh, and Netflix - have to get around to changing the account information to my info.

OK. That’s cool. Other than that - what can I do with this?

I am a little concerned with games and apps. I’m not intending to put anything valuable on this (in other words, while I might access message boards I’m not looking at my bank account or main e-mail) but I’m somewhat concerned about security. It would be nice to carry and use with free wi-fi in various places but how much do I/don’t I need to worry?

Yep, I’m soooo 20th Century - any ideas/tips/suggestions for a new tablet owner?

I’ve had my Nexus 7 since early 2013, and have never worried about security because I use my laptop for banking, and only on my home network.

After every ‘update’ it has gradually got slower and slower, until I turned off/disabled all of the Google notifications and apps I could without it turning into a shiny brick. I just use it for surfing and watching movies I’ve put on it’s memory, and reading emails (you’ll also have to change the Google details to your own, which ‘may’ affect the games/apps on it).

If you go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Security’ there are several ways you can lock it, in case it falls into the wrong hands.

Oh, I’ve also got an app called ‘Offline Browser’ which allows me to download newspaper websites, so I can read them when not in a WiFi zone, and a books app to do the same. All it’s good for is consuming media, really, and playing some games. The hardware isn’t very fast, in fact I just bought a Samsung S5 which wipes the floor with it, but the Nexus has a reasonably nice screen, okay memory, and I have an On the Go adapter so can also plug in memory sticks which hold more media.

I’m trying to change the e-mail/google account from my dad to me and I’m not clear on how to do that.

There aren’t many apps on it, and only free games, so I’m not concerned about those.

Dad also managed to get “Google Hindi Input” on this thing, too, which is weird because no one in the family knows Hindi. Not sure at all how to kill that one.

Install the free Kindle Reader app and read Kindle books without having to hunch over a computer screen.

I have a Kindle Fire already

Although that is a very good idea…

Yeah, I use my tablet 99% of the time as an eReader. Anything else is more easily done on my phone or my computer.
