Have to work on Veteran's Day?!

I work for a restaurant that offers free dinners to current and past members of the military. I have to work 3-9pm. I am going to be soooo beat after work.

Happy Veteran’s Day and thank you for your service.

You forgot Independence Day. So it’s really a 50-50 split between Federal holidays that are automatically moved to a Monday (MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day) and those that aren’t (Independence Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s).

And there’s Inauguration Day for the tiebreaker: if its quadrennial appearance falls on a weekday, it’s a Federal holiday, and it is not moved to a Monday.

It’s Armistist Day idiot.

That’s Armistice.

Sure, before I retired. School is in session and so they expect the teachers to show up.

The only people I know who get the day off are people who work in banks or the post office. My parents always worked, too, so I would have to just vote yes without the WTF happened to the holiday because I don’t remember things ever shutting down for it.

Labor Day has always been celebrated on the first Monday of September since it was enacted in 1894. So even though it fits the pattern of other holidays that were shifted to Monday or Friday to create a three day weekend, it still is the traditional day for the holiday.

Interestingly, the public schools around here (greater Los Angeles) are closed. OK, I don’t know about all of them, but Los Angeles Unified and Long Beach Unified are off today.

My daughter’s (private) elementary school, on the other hand, is open; she’s only home today because she’s sick.

I had the day off today. But where I worked for more than a decade prior to this we didn’t ever get Veteran’s day off.

I was a Fed employee for 37 years and always had the day off. Now I’m a temp and if I don’t work, I don’t get paid. The company I work for, even tho it’s a gummint contractor, doesn’t give Veteran’s day as a holiday. But they do give the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve as holidays. Not that it does me any good - no work, no pay…

This, except I don’t know anyone who works in a bank or post office. I honestly didn’t even realize banks and the post office closed down for Veteran’s Day.

I am working but it was optional. Not sure about my friends.

I work in the private sector (market research), and I’m working today. I don’t think I’ve ever had it off, in my 24-year career.

Most of the people I know who have it off work in the public sector (particularly teachers, though, as noted above, not every school is closed today).

On most veteran’s days when I was on active duty I had to march in a VD parade while civilians took the day off to watch us. I have never had a veteran’s day off after leaving the Army.

I’m a consultant at the USPS office in Minnesota. I think the main reason they hire consultants is so they can take holidays off; I’ll also be working Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

I can’t say my company sucks so I didn’t answer the poll. We don’t get the “minor” holidays, but we get winter break between Christmas and New Year’s so I can’t complain. We get

Christmas Eve
Christmas Day
winter break days depending how calendar falls
New Year’s Day
Memorial Day
July 4
Labor Day
Thanksgiving
Day after Thanksgiving

I work every day, especially holidays. Though I guess it’s my choice. Back when I was employed I usually worked 180-200 days in a row with no days off, but that’s because I mostly worked seasonal jobs. I guess I usually got Veteran’s Day off then, but I was always at least going to school or something.

I don’t think I ever had the day off except when I worked for the school system. My daughter worked today. I worked too, as in I had my child home from school and I’ve spent what could be a nice quiet Monday entertaining her.

It’s Remembrance Day here. Many people get the day off but I had to go to school. In grade/high school we never got the day off.

Really? I can’t think of a single time when Veteran’s Day wasn’t observed on a Monday. My birthday is Nov. 10 so I’m aware of this.

How about 2011? Or 2010, or 2009, or 2008?

It’s Armistice day, idiot. We get Veterans day, but we’re allowed to use our holidays any day within the same month. So I’ll use it on Black Friday. Most people were in today, and will do the same.

At my prior employer, we got the Big Six holidays, plus four floating holidays we could use any time during the year. We got them at the beginning of the year, so when I switched jobs in the middle of the year, I got a total 12 holidays that year instead of the usual ten.

Yes, I work and so does everyone I know. My parents worked it when I was growing up, and I went to parochial school, so still went to school.

It has never registered as a holiday on any level for me.
