Have You Ever Been Hit By A Car As A Pedestrian?

I’m also remembering one extremely close call I had. August 31, 1997, the day that Princess Di was killed. The Skytrain was still under construction here in Bangkok, and I exited a cab at Siam Square. The construction made it difficult to see oncoming traffic, and I should have been more careful anyway, but the moment I got out of the cab, I saw a big-ass bus hurtling down on me. I literally leaped out of the way. So the day of Princess Di’s demise was very nearly my own too.

Yes, when I was seven. The car had run a red light and split afterwards. It was pretty hard and I flew quite far, or so I’m told. Messed up my eye and spleen and dinged me up pretty badly. I have no memory of the event except my brother crying over me in the hospital (he had been with me).

Once, at age 4. My father had taken us 3 youngest kids to Sunday Mass (Mom and oldestbro had already been, I think). At one point, I realized that #2bro wasn’t there. I asked Dad where he’d gone. Dad said “Communion”. Having no idea what “Communion” was, I went to look for him in the car - which was parked a block away and required crossing the busy street right in front of the church. I got to the car, saw nobody in it, and went back to church, where I was hit crossing the street.

I don’t recall the actual impact, just sitting on the sidewalk afterward with a bunch of people around me including Dad. So it must not have been much of a hit.

Oh - and apparently Dad never told Mom of this. I mentioned it to Mom casually about 15 years later “that time I got hit by a car” and she was flabbergasted and, not unreasonably, a bit pissed!. She chewed Dad out pretty good.

The funniest (as in “odd” not “haha”) is why I cared about that brother’s location. He’s a bully and even then he was abusive and I didn’t like him much.

Yes, once. Sort of, another time. The “sort of,” I was crossing with the light on a busy intersection at something like 28th and Mission in San Fran. Plenty of pedestrian traffic. The first car waiting at the red light was stopped, then started rolling forward as I was passing in front of it. It just ever so barely grazed my pants. I yelled at the guy “Do you wanna NOT FUCKING RUN INTO ME?”

The real time, I was going to work at probably 5 AM, dark morning. Some dicklick didn’t stop at a stop sign, and clippd my calf with his car. I fell, but had no damage. He did stop, and say “Where did you come from, where were you?” I should have given him a ration of shit for running the stop sign, but I knew I was fine, wanted to get to work, and was probably disoriented because I had just woken up, so I just said, “I’m fine, just go.”

The first day I was in Oxford I was hit by a bus. Looked left instead of right while stepping out into the street. Somehow I just picked myself up, dusted myself off, and continued crossing the street.

Got hit in a crosswalk by an idiot woman who had stopped, let my husband cross in front of her, and then hit me.
I had a sore knee for a bit, but that was all.

Running downtown, I would say I nearly get hit about 50% of the time. (On the sidewalk; having to stop to avoid being run down by cars screaming out of alleys)

I voted “other” - I was intentionally hit by a car while I was riding my bike once. They tried to push me off the bike but couldn’t unseat me, so they then just veered into me AND pushed. That sent me flying.

Owing to being unconscious, I didn’t get the license plate number. Bystanders, seeing me lying on the side of the road apparently dead, called 911. At some point I regained consciousness and someone suggested I get up to see how badly I was hurt; I declined to move as I was concerned about a possible spine injury.

I was really lucky - just a hairline crack in my pelvis, some road rash and a LOT of soreness.

Oh, and Alice the Goon, I cried too.

Got hit by the bus while waiting at the bus stop outside my high school. Had my back turned and the roads were icy sleet. The buss braked for the stop and slid up onto the sidewalk and hit me from behind. It wasn’t much more than a solid tackle, and most of it was taken up by the chain link fence that I flew into. As I got on the bus the bus driver screamed at me for standing with my back turned, I guess he was in way more shock than I was.

got bumped by an idiot soccer mom in an suv while she was backing out of a parking space at walmart once. stupid cow was on her cell at the time and obviously that was more important than looking where she was going!!

i banged her rear window with my fist so hard it rattled. it didn’t hurt that i happened to have on one of my BIL’s state police sweatshirts at the time (no, i’m not a cop).

i leveled my patented stage manager death-glare at her and told her to hang up the phone. she did.

I’d cry, too, in most of your cases.

I must say it is encouraging that most people who’ve been hit by a car sustained only minor injuries (except for those who were killed and therefore not here to post, I guess.) I saw a kid get hit by a car right in front of me when I was six years old, and he was thrown from the scene a bloody mess, with sounds of snapping bones I will never forget. He spent many months in the hospital but recovered to the point that a couple of years later he was playing baseball on my team. It has made me somewhat over-cautious about letting my kids cross the street on their own.

I almost got hit (and it would have been bad) last night by some total assholes going 60 mph around the corner right below where I was crossing, THE WRONG WAY up my street - the lane they wanted to go up was blocked by an unloading truck. I hate people.

Thank goodness I have good hearing and quick reflexes - I had my head turned to check traffic in the other (correct) direction, but heard the car coming from the other side and even though I was confused, skipped backwards out of harm’s way.

Not as a pedestrian per se, but I have been hit by a car as a bicyclist. The car was moving really slowly (pulling up to a stop), and there was no lasting damage to myself or my bike.

I’ve been hit while on my bike several times.

I’ve also been hit as a pedestrian by cars - 90% of the time they were making an illegal right-on-red without looking in front of them. All of them were slow motion hits so no damage. The one driver whose hood I jumped on was quite upset, however.

That sounds awful. If you had a golf club, you might have beaten the man to death (+1 yay!) or else hurt that thing’s car enough so he’d have had to have stop.

(IMHO people like that don’t deserve to live, but that’s just MO)

ETA yeah, I’m a city guy, so buyer beware, but if they fuck you up, you fuck them right back up and then some.
