Have you ever been shot?

I can testify that the tetanus one hurts the worst.

When I was in college I worked the grave yard shift at a Gulf Station. Anyway this dude wanted to wash his car but the car wash doors were closed. He begged and pleaded so I finally said ok and went out to open the door. Well the door(one of those plate window doors) was stuck so I thought I would put my back into it.

So I turned around put my butt against the glass and started to lift it up with my hands behind me. Well the dang glass broke shoving a knife size piece of glass in my butt. It just kind of stung a little it didn’t really hurt to bad. I was just thankful it missed my bung hole by about a inch then it would hurt everytime I ate mexican food.

It did kind of hurt when I pulled it out it went in about three inches. So the guy split after he washed he car.

I went back in set down and waited till my boss came took me to the hospitol and got 8 stiches. There is alot of bleeding with a stab wound though I felt kinda funny.

I talked to a fellow once who had been both shot and stabbed. He claimed he’d rather get shot any day of the week. He did not like knives at all.

I took part of a .38 slug in the middle of the forehead once (it came in at an angle and exited just over my left brow ridge, which is why I look like my right eyebrow is permanently raised). I still don’t know how the guy managed it–I was standing well behind him on the range, and he didn’t appear to do anything egregiously stupid.

I did hear the shot first, but I never heard the (presumed) ricochet. I felt the floor against my back before I felt anything in my head. When that sensation came through, it was like a line of fire along the path of the bullet, a stinging in my eyes from the blood, and a horrible ache in my head and neck. I may have been unconscious for a moment. The guy ran over and knelt over me–he saw all the blood and thought he’d killed me, up until I reached up and grabbed him, at which point he nearly fainted.

Stabs/cuts (I’ve had a few of those, too–my doctor offered me bulk rate on stitches once) hurt more at the site, I think, but they lack the impact to cause the widespread pain that being shot does. The worst was an accident with a broken CRT–a shard of glass cut a hole an inch across and two inches deep in my belly. It felt cold, then hot, and then both at once. I’m not sure what the differences would have been with a knife, but glass surely sucks.

I remember Jonathan Miller’s series from PBS, “The Body in Question.” In one episode he spoke about how people describe body aches and pains as stabbing pains. He then asked a bobby who had been stabbed what it felt like. The bobby said only that it felt like being punched. I assume that’s before the pain set in.
