Have you ever killed somone?

Nope, not even wounded any. And I was in Vietnam.

I could tell you, but then …

I ate my unborn twin in the womb… does that count?

Depending how you define it, you could say everyone’s killed someone. Is not saving someone considered killing? Abortion? How about contributing to climate change, causing natural disasters?

I h ave given the final dose of morphine to someone when I knew they were in pain and in the last hours of their life, the morphine just made the end come a few minutes quicker and a whole lot easier.

Is that killing? I would say no, but others might define it as such.

Outside of a clinical setting, no… unless you posit that living a middle class lifestyle in a first world country contributes to the death of others because of poor distribution of wealth and resources, in which case I plead guilty as charged.

I’m really hoping masturbation does not count…

Good lord, I’m guilty of genocide.

I mean, figuratively I’ve killed all kinds of people.

I haven’t, but one of my other personalities might have. I’ll send a different one to the front and then let them answer the poll.

While I understand this is just an opinion poll on a website, I’d like to put my opinion here that actually asking this question of military veterans (regardless of which action they participated in and for which country) is generally considered to be quite an insensitive and tasteless question, not to mention a great breach of personal activity, for lack of a better word. Most of us consider this question an insult. And also, not a very inviting mention of things most of would rather not relive to ourselves, much less describe the actions to others or civilians whose experiences are limited to video games in lieu of real life.

This does not count in video games, WOW, RPGs, LARPing, and what not. But for those who have served, I wouldn’t advise asking this question face to face.

I’m going to get off of my soapbox now. Carry on.

I once worked on research that could very clearly be used to develop a weapons system. Does that count?

It is possible, though I don’t know, that once this went to human trials that some patient may have died from the treatment I helped develop. We weren’t trying to kill people. Never intended such. But nevertheless some probably did die as a direct result of what we developed.

Killing, yes. Murder, no.

Thats what you thought, BUT HE’S INSIDE YOUR HEAD!

As a veteran I can tell you that walking up to someone and asking "How many people did you kill?"is rude and insulting. A private poll on a message board? Not so much.

It can be surprisingly easy. It’s not until they yell, “YOU’RE KILLING ME!” that I realise I have to stop with the jokes until they can compose themselves.

Do we have dopers that post from prison?

One. But he’s a doctor there.

And what of caregiving?

If you’ve nursed someone to their death I’d say there’s a pretty good chance some innocent thing you did, (putting the bed down, leaving patient to sleep, perhaps not hearing if they called out, etc), may well have hastened their end by an hour, a day, a week. Who can say? How would you know?

Is that killing someone?

I don’t know. I have fired an M-16A2 in the direction of an unseen enemy in Gulf Wars I: Daddy’s Debacle but I do not know if I killed anyone or not.

We should be able to choose more than one of these (at least among the “yes” options).

You can.

At least, I did yesterday.
