I don’t think I ever have. I seem to always fall between two hole and have to create my own.
Do I just suck at picking out belts?
Better question: why the hell don’t belt makers put the hole closer together?

No, but I’ve gotten those weave belts where you can lock them anywhere.
I mean, if you are actually trying to do it for fashion, then I’d say you probably should stick with the slightly too big hole, unless you’re just really good with a leather punch.
Aren’t the holes in a belt spaced 1 inch apart (USA here) and does a half inch in either direction really make a difference?
They’re basically 1 inch spacing. They need that much gap between them because if you space them too closely, the tang will start ripping holes to make one long slot. That won’t hold up your pants very well. The one inch standard comforms to pants being at per inch sizes.
I find that belt manufacturers never take my stomach into account.
pricks.
I have the same problem with watch bands.
Mesh or canvas band, if they’re your style.
They’re definitely not my style, I take my watch off 25 times a day so I need metal bands, if they’re to last longer than the battery.
I don’t need to get holes in between existing holes, in belts. I need a handspan chopped off the belt and additional holes put in. Who came up with the notion that women wear belts only if our waists are 80cm or greater? And my 70cm are nowhere near “small”, there’s women with 60cm and less.
Surprisingly, 1 inch spacing just has never cut it for me.
For instance today I had on a new dress belt. Using one hole (making belt a little too big) was fine for sitting around and having my pockets empty. But once I put my wallet, cell and keys in my pocket, my pants started falling down. If I went down one more hole then my waist band cinched up and looked bad (and felt bad). One hole between the two would have been perfect (always is).
I have always had this problem and always end up cutting a new hole. Never have I had the belt tear due to the holes being too close.
I WANT HALF INCH SPACING!!!
Just measured mine - it’s either 2.5 cm or 1 in spacing too (cannot determine the difference as 1 in = 2.54 cm). Never felt a problem with one hole being too tight but the next one out being too loose. (I choose belts nowadays so that I use the innermost hole; if I need to loose the belt it’s a red flag for fine-tuning my lifestyle.)
You should be using the watchband on your wrist. That may be your problem.
The mesh ones I’m talking about are metal. Here’s an example, although the one I have is a much finer meshwork. The clash you see can be unlocked and slid up and down the band. There are fixed points where it locks in but they’re about 5mm apart.
