Have You Ever Ridden In or Driven a REALLY Exotic Car (like a $100K+ sports car)?

I asked this question several years ago and got a few responses. Rather than resurrect a zombie thread, I decided to ask again. I have TubaDiva’s permission.

Anyway, have you ever driven or ridden in a really exotic car, such as a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, McClaren, etc.? Like, something with a $100,000 or greater price tag? [Yes, I know that there are some boring old 4-door German sedans that command $100,000+ , but that’s not what we’re talking about here.]

When and where, and under what circumstances, did you drive it? How fast did you go? Was it comfortable? How did it handle? Was it worth the price tag, IYHO?

Dish!

As for me, the answer is a resounding NO. The closes I’ve come is the limo I rode to prom in, but that’s sort of reaching.

They’re slightly less than your given price tag, but I’ve both ridden in and driven a Dodge Viper (~$75,000+) and an Acura/Honda NSX (~$80,000). Very nice cars, the both of them. Tho’ you get more looks in the Viper - people in rural western Wisconsin recognize it more readily. They know the Acura is a sports car, but not what it is. It doesn’t seem to draw as much attention.

I drove a NASCAR stock car. Pretty cool–though the first three gears are total crap, and the car doesn’t really drive well until you reach about 75 mph (as you’d expect).

My aunt owns an Maserati Cambiocorsa (I think I referred to it in another thread as an Aston Martin, sorry). It’s a pretty sweet ride, although the steering wheel gear shift takes some getting used to.

Nope. The coolest car I’ve owned/driven was a Porsche 911SC. Not an exotic because the price (adjusted for inflation) does not meet the price criterion in the OP, and because it is a mass-market car.

A friend of mine (whom I call BeelzeBob) was a Ferrari fanatic. He’d go on and on about how much better a Ferrari was than my Porsche. I could shut him up though, by saying, ‘Do you know what the difference is between my Porsche and your Ferrari? I have a Porsche!’ :stuck_out_tongue: (I wouldn’t trust him in a Ferrari, BTW. He totalled his classic 1960s T-bird, he totalled his Jensen-Healey, and he’s totalled a few other of his cars.)

I thought about getting a used Ferrari Mondial cabriolet about ten years ago. I like the design, and they’re relatively cheap. But the 911 is functionally better.

I’ve driven a stretch Hummer limo. Exotic - yes. Fun to drive - no. The term “boat” doesn’t begin to cover it! I’ve also driven a Bentley and a Rolls. Both were nice rides, but not my style. I prefer a car with a ride so tight that I can run over a dime and tell you whether it was heads or tails…a smooth suspension is no fun for me at all!

Well, kinda.

I’ve ridden in a 1984 Lamborghini countach. Noisy, velourcoverd, and a perfect ten. (And by that I mean, from ten feet, it looks perfect.) It was a rental, and had lived a rough life.

I’ve driven a 1994 Corvette ZR-1. It’s only a $75,000 car, but that’s in 1994 dollars, so to the inflation adjustment as necessary.) Didn’t turn off the Valet key…even then, it was a bit faster than my 89 L-98 Corvette.

Severely warmed-over Callaway Aerobodied ZR-1. This car was faster than our 1998 C5 Corvette, with half the fuel injectors turned off (valet mode). It’s well and truely a beastly vehicle. The previous owner was a DEA agent, I suspect the owner before THAT had some, erm, pharmacological, dealings. The car has been black, purple, white, and now bright yellow, so if it wasn’t a $100k car before, it was after considering the paint.

Now, setting the (arbitrary) dollar figure aside. I’ve got a $15,000 1989 Corvette, with $15-20,000 in mods that flat blows away everything else I’ve ridden/driven in. It’s goal was to be the fastest thing from 0-100 I could build. While it doesn’t have impressive hp figures, the torque, and what’s done with it, makes for a REALLY fun street car.

It’s faster than everything except it’s garage mate, a 1998 Corvette that got the supercharger treatment about 8 months ago. It’s quicker still, turning a corrected 13.05@108 mph in the quartermile with no tuning. mid-12’s are certainly in it’s future.

I was at the car show a while back, and had a photo op of me ‘driving’ a Corvette.

I’ve also been in the driver’s seat of an Abrams main battle tank. How’s that for exotic?

(No, the tank was stationary at the time. So I wasn’t driving it.)

My father has a Rolls and I have driven it on several occasions. I hate the thing.

My dad has a Porsche 928 that I’ve driven a few times (much of it in western Wisconsin, Snickers); that was the exotic, expensive Porsche when it came out, but hasn’t really held its value or prestige. Still an awful lot of fun, though.

The most interesting driving experience I’ve ever had was in a rental; a turbo-diesel Mercedes sedan. I hit 130 mph on the autobahn and ran a few laps at the Nurburgring.

If I had just had the former car in the latter place…

I’ve driven several Porsches. (911 Turbo, 911 Carrera, 928 S4) all were new at the time. late 80’s, early 90’s. Owned by my fiance at the time and the father of my children.

I also drove a 1988 Lamborghini Countach a few times, also owned by my boys’ father. It’s not street legal, so we were only able to drive it around the storage facility it is kept at, but still, damn fun.

The 88 Countach was the 25th anniversary, and the last Countach, the next year the Diablo came out. He paid over $300K for the car. I have no idea what it is worth today, but I do know that he still owns it, and it still sits in storage, and only started and driven around every couple of months or so. A waste of a beautiful car if you ask me.

psycat90, a quick calculation would indicate that you’re doing quite well as far as child support goes. I mean, who can afford a $300,000 dollar car and just let it sit? If he’s got that kind of dough he should be able to afford a nice heated garage to keep it in. On his own property, no less.

HAHAHA. Let’s not go there.

Back in 1968, my friend’s father had a 1957 Mercedes 300SL “Gullwing” coupe AND a 1963 Mercedes 300 SL roadster. Unbelievably, my friend’s dad used to let us take both cars out for spins. Both cars were incredibly fast. The Gullwing was especially amazing - just raw power under the hood. We once got it up to 130 mph, and weren’t close to redlining it! My friend let me drive it, on the condition I didn’t take it over 100!

I test drove a '66 Ferrari in 1977, It had 30,000 miles and died at 2 stop lights. I bought a 1977 Datsun 280Z instead.
I drive a Corvette now. It only cost about $56K new. So doesn’t really qualify.
I’ve ridden as a single passenger in a chauffeured Lincoln Town Car to the airport. Regular rental fee $300.00, my fee priceless! (That would be free.) The hotel screwed up a number of things and this was their way of getting me out of their town.

Oh! I almost forgot, A friend had a DeLorian (sp?) that he let me drive in a parking lot.

-Porsche 911 turbo
-Porsche 914 (snicker)
-Ferrari Testarossa
-DeLorean
-Hummer

I drove a crane at a shipyard once. It stood probably 150+ feet tall and was mounted on rails. I was told it cost a few million to build (that was in 1960’s dollars).

Have ridden in, but never driven, a Bentley owned by a another member of the Vestry at my church. It was a great ride, but not something I’d buy even if I could afford it.

Drove 40th Anniversary Porsche 911.
Been in a Ferrari 512tr (damn impressive).

Michael Dukakus? Is that you?
