Have you ever taken a day off from work to play a video game?

I have bunches of times and I am wondering if that is relatively common or I just have a character flaw

If you define ‘video game’ as a computer game, then yes…several times. In fact, I’m planning to take off this Friday when Skyrim comes out and am putting in a stock of munchies and soda so that I can stay glued to the computer for much of the day. It helps that I don’t have any trips scheduled for the next few weeks so I’ll actually be home, and nothing major is going on at work right now (smacks self in head to knock on wood).

Yes, but as a day’s leave, I didn’t call in sick on the day or anything.

Plenty of times. What else would I do with my annual leave? It’s meant to be used for your hobbies.

Considering I do almost all my gaming on a PC, of course this counts Computer games

Yep! Can’t SWEAR I haven’t called in sick for it, but I don’t recall doing so.
I have the 19th of Dec off for SWTOR, in fact. (Preorder for early access; I’ll go back to work Tuesday, knowing I’ll miss all the opening day FUBAR-ness)

No.

Back in the day, I called in sick so i could play Planescape: Torment

Never taken a day off from work, but I certainly skipped a few classes in college to play.

I may have taken a mental health day and spent it playing video games, but I don’t look at it as ducking work. If I didn’t play a video game that day I would have done something else to entertain myself.

Likewise, I’ve taken a day off and I’ve spent it playing video games, but I can’t remember a time when that was the specific purpose.

Agreed. The only times I might have been tempted were for MMORPG launches (or their expansions) but I never did because, invariably, the servers would be seven hours later coming up anyway. Instead I’d go to work and read people raging on the game forums about how they used their only day of vacation that year to play Final EverCraft and the servers wouldn’t be up until 6pm.

A really thorough HR executive looking into my sickdays could stumble onto the following pattern :

TombRaider II

November 1998

TombRaider III

October 1999

Final fantasy VIII

February 2001

Final Fantasy IX

January , 2007

November, 2008

The wrath of the Lich King

Oktober. 2011

Batman: Arkham City

Sure - I always book a friday or monday off if there’s a marathon-suitable game coming out. (Though I have been beset by evils and my week off* ends on the day Skyrim comes out. sigh)

    • I work night shifts, one week on and one week off.

I’ve tried a few times, but something actually important at work has always come up just at the worst possible time.

I’m trying again in Nov, but…

Nope, never.

Sure…a couple of times. Not “<koff! koff!> Sorry boss, I’m too sick”, but legit time off.

I took a four-day weekend when GTA III came out.

No, but I recall when ‘Doom’ came out I considered it. Yeah, I’m old.

I don’t call in sick, I just skip sleep. Sleep is for pussies! Nothing like sleep deprivation hallucinations to make the game all that much more interesting!

No. And it’s not that I don’t take a day off and then spend it playing videogames, for example, but it’s not for that purpose.

I have wanted to take off days for reading a book. Never did that either, though books have made me late on occasion.
