Have you ever thrown up with no warning or obvious cause?

I’m not looking for medical advice, just possible causes, how common is this, did it ever happen to you or someone you know and so forth.

I had my annual medical check-up complete with a full battery of tests a few weeks ago and everything was normal. I feel great. I’m in good health. I’m not pregnant, I haven’t hit my head, I didn’t eat anything that was spoiled, I don’t have the flu, my blood pressure isn’t high and so on.

This afternoon I was at my desk, feeling fine. When I went to stand up, I threw up. No warning, no nausea, nothing. Out of the blue. I felt normal afterward.

It’s happened twice before. The first time was at least 7 or 8 years ago, and the second time was a couple of weeks ago. The first time, I had bent over really fast after eating quickly and blamed it on that. The second time was just like today. One second I was fine and the next I was

Obviously if it happens again in the near future, I’ll make an appointment with a doctor, but for now I’m wondering if this is something that just happens to people every once in a while or what.

It sounds more like regurgitation than vomiting. Regurgitated material comes from the esophagus, whereas vomiting is caused by violent contractions of the stomach. Was the food that you threw up still recognizable?

No, it was mostly liquid.

This happens to me if I eat to much or have a lot of liquid in my stomach. It just comes up, usually suddenly. It’s usually a fairly small amount and doesn’t taste like stomach acid very much. I will sometimes continue to ‘regurgitate’ my food for a few mouthfuls. I usually spit it out or re-swallow it. It doesn’t taste gross, just tastes like what I just drank or ate.

Does this sound like what happened?

I had a weird experience a few years ago. I woke up in the middle of the night and started to get up, assuming I had woken because I needed a piss. When I got sitting up on the side of the bed I realized I was going to vomit. As soon as I moved I sprayed vomit over the mirror, wall and carpet. I ran to the ensuite and repeated the performance into the corner of the room.

As soon as I finished I felt fine. In fact I was well enough to spend ages cleaning it all up before going back to sleep. I woke up next morning and went to work. I had no lingering ill effects at all.

I had been drinking a lot of coffee. Todays episode tasted like stomach acid but when it happened a couple of weeks ago, it tasted like Kashi Mayan Harvest Bake, which was what I had eaten for lunch.

I did it once after pulling from the left lane to the right shoulder on 96 in DE. I was going 80 and felt like I had to heave and got over and parked in a few seconds. Didn’t get the car door open in time.

This happened to me about 6 months ago - I was sitting at my desk (at home, thank god), eating a bowl of cereal and reading some papers. Suddenly I yakked rather a lot, all over the papers, which had unfortunately been lent to me by my supervisor. I didn’t even have enough warning to move the papers, turn my head, stand up, or anything. I was concerned about it at the time, but it hasn’t happened sonce and I have an otherwise clean bill of health, so I never really looked into it.

It was pretty strange, but the worst part was telling my supervisor why he wasn’t getting his papers back.

About ten years ago, I was just walking along, and suddenly my stomach decided the sidewalk was too dry and clean. I didn’t even have a chance to get to the curb - barely managed to bend over enough not to barf on myself.

Then, I was like “Self, what the hell was that about?” I hadn’t been drinking, hadn’t eaten recently, and wasn’t sick. Just needed to puke for some reason.

This is a potentially serious situation, and you should make the appointment with the doctor right away rather than trying to self-diagnose using an Internet message board. I know that sounds harsh, but it’s policy to close threads like this and encourage people to see a real doctor quickly.
