Have you heard the term "cruising" (referring to young kids)?

Hmmm. I have a kid, but she’s just of crawling age. Never heard the term, but now at least I can act like I’ve known it forever when it inevitably comes up in conversation!

When preemies are born in my hospital system, they are referred to a Growth and Development Clinic to follow along and check on any problems as they reach “age-corrected” milestones. One of those milestones is “cruising.” Very, very prominent (at least in medical reports) in southern Ontario.

The Baader-Meinhof phenomenon will strike.

I’ll be keeping an ear out for it this weekend. I would not be surprised if I do hear it pop up, as I’ll be out with other parents and their kids.

I’m from New Jersey, and I’ve heard it plenty of times. Not being a parent, I don’t cruise (see what I did there?) the mommy blogs, but I do know plenty of people with babies. I guess that’s where I know it from.

Me neither. I have seen Pampers Cruisers advertised and just thought it referred to toddlers running and climbing about as on the commercial.

I heard it when my son was that age – about 35 years ago in Chicago. I heard it earlier when nephew was that age – about 40 years ago Cleveland OH.

I also heard the term “cruising” referring to driving around looking for/at girls as a teen about 50 years ago. There was a series of record albums named “Cuisin’ '58” etc.

Yeah, didn’t come up in conversation. Out of curiosity, I asked my wife since, well, she is up on the parenting reading list and websites a lot more than I am, and she didn’t know what it was, either. Curious.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting and What to Expect: The FIrst Year were the go to books 20 years ago when my son was born. Everyone I knew was reading them. They listed milestones to look for with your new baby. Cruising was definitely listed among those and can be found on their website.

Yes, I’ve heard it in that context. Not recently, but quite a lot 15 or so years ago when my son was doing it.

I guess we haven’t gotten that far in the book yet. We do have it around.
