So I spotted this corn maze in a newspaper this morning and I nominate it for Worst Corn Maze. As far as I can tell, it looks like there are only two possible wrong turns of which you can’t see the dead end.
The submarine seems fascinating but only partially complete. So have you encountered any similar under-achieving farm mazes that you would like to enter into the contest?
I’m certainly no connoisseur of corn mazes, but how easy is it to tell from a distance whether you’re looking at a dead end or a 90 degree turn or T intersection?
The wife and I went to one this weekend. We were surprised by just how big it was. It took us an hour to get through, and that was with a map and I’m really good at directions.
We also went in just as the sun was going down so luckily my phone was fully charged, or else we’d probably still be in there.
You really can’t tell a dead end from a turn in a corn maze until you get right to the end, especially when the ends are rounded a little. That maze certainly isn’t the fanciest but it would keep you busy for a while.
The one closest to our house is usually ridiculously huge and is about 6 miles long if you want to cover the whole thing without making mistakes. If you make a lot of mistakes it can take all afternoon. After about an hour it stops being all that much fun.
There’s one about a mile from where I live, and for the third year in a row, it’ll be pretty sad.
Three years ago, the corn was tall and plentiful. Then a storm with a major downdraft came thru and flattened most of the field.
Last year was pretty dry, and the corn was really short. I guess the maze would have worked for kids.
This year, it’s short again - at least the bit I can see from the road. And it’s really sad, because in the past, they’ve had some really great mazes. I bet it really hurts their bottom line…
Then again, I just found this- so apparently there’s lots more to the place than I can see from the road.
The only one I’ve ever visited (though I have to laugh at the page touting “picked as one of the top corn maze attractions in the DC area”. One of the top? How many ARE there??? Not terribly many!!!
I got you all beat. Here is a pic of my kids at the “corn maze” at a local gourd farm. I found it hilarious, and they actually had a good time with it. We’re going back to the farm this year - they had pony rides, face-painting, some games, and a fun little haunted hayride that was just right on the scare scale. And good pumpkins for sale. It was fun. But a different class of corn maze, for sure!
Local petting farm here held their usual corn maze a couple of years ago, but the corn crop was terrible. Stalks didn’t grow and there were big gaps in the field, and it was impossible to mow a proper maze in it.
So, instead of prudently deciding to cancel the maze for the year, the manager sent out an employee to get big rolls of plastic sheeting to outline the maze. :smack:
Employee brought back sheeting - it was clear plastic. :smack:
Manager told employee to paint plastic sheeting black with spray paint. :smack:
Employee went to hospital (and later filed for workman’s comp due to respiratory problems incurred) after inhaling shit-ton of spray paint.
Corn maze was a complete joke with drippy painted plastic sheeting draped everywhere.
I’ve never been in a corn maze, but do you really want to make them too hard? I mean, anything more than a couple of turns and you’ll have people in there totally turned around and you’ll have to send in more people to get them out. By the end of the day, you’ll have dozens of kids and old people staggering around in the afternoon heat and have to send someone over to Wal-Mart to pick up more of the orange day-glow vests for the staff.
