Well, you’ve set up a system where a sizable chunk of your population has easier access to handguns than to anti-depressants, so reap, sow… etc.
I used to think so.
The folks arguing for gun control ( for the most part ) are hopelessly uninformed and instead of calmly discussing facts they vomit on you. I wish there was an informed debate, but you do not get it until it reaches the SCOTUS level due to the media driven hysteria surrounding the issue.
I like AR15’s, not as much fun as a machine gun but I like them.
To most morons that shudder at the thought of liberty an AR15* is a machine gun.* That’s plain stupid.
The landmark case* “people V Larry Flynt”* for instance, I hate Flynt truly a disgusting foul ignorant lowlife. However he does have the right to print that filth. That’s why I will sometimes donate to the ACLU, to protect speech.
However freedom is dangerous, I prefer it to serfdom though. That’s why I call the anti side “freedom haters” they imagine giving up liberty will insure safety. It never will. Even dictatorships like Red China and old Soviet Union had crime, corruption.
Then try this on for size: I grew up with handguns and rifles in Northern Idaho, served my time in the military, and have owned several guns over the years. I think the 2nd Amendment could be improved by taking that part about the militia out of the first section, clarifying that it is an individual’s right to own guns and not any militia.
I also think that Wayne LaPierre if a fucking nutcase that serves his masters in the gun industry, adding fuel to the fire when he sees a chance, and starting fires where there weren’t any before. He should be removed from his position, then bound and gagged, as a show of good faith that the NRA is controlled by it’s members and not the puppet masters of the gun industry.
bah. so many teen shooter were on meds.
I will concur that we do little to help the dangerously insane though. Once a large homeless man was stalking a teenage girl I knew. We called the police but even though the guy would follow her, tell her he was going to slit her throat, calling her a “whore lesbian porn star” (the girl actually is a lesbian) and claiming Steven Spielberg was telling him ( via telepathy ) that he needed to kill her …
The girls mom asked me for advice, but being that she was a freshman in a San Francisco High School, her carrying a weapon was out of the question.
So I told the guy I was going to make him stop. He told me that I’m not a cop and to go away.
I punched him in the nose and all of a sudden he wasn’t the big bad psycho homeless guy any longer. The police were even unhappy but luckily the guy informed the police that his “Vatican Passport gave him the right to tell them what to do”
Anytime I saw him I told him if I saw him near her he would get the excrement beat out of him and it worked. He’s now in another neighborhood.
Yet, I really feel sorry for him. I also told him that if he took his meds and checked into SF General psych unit that they will help him get off the street but it didn’t work.
There is no hope, freedom is very dangerous. Its best to be able to defend yourself.
LOL!!! I actually know a gay guy, as committed to gay rights as gun rights who said nearly the same exact thing! I would certainly vote for my friend to replace Wayne. I only have one vote though.
We need to change the culture of money being in charge. I don’t have a clue how to do that though.
To most NRA members I know, the gun industry does little to support “the peoples” right to keep and bear. The gun industry would be content getting gov’t contracts.
I’m pretty sure that’s the case now.
But you’re wrong. If everyone has their own shrink, meds will be handed out like M&Ms.
afaik meds are being handed out like candy, I bet the recent school killer was either on them or not taking them as prescribed.
NRA “logic” in one new slogan:
Guns don’t kill people… Video games kill people.
I don’t understand what you’re calling me wrong about. Isn’t it the case that tens of millions of Americans have no access to affordable and effective mental-health care (and health care in general)? As I understand it, the poor can get Medicaid, for what that’s worth, but when a working-class family with no or limited employer insurance has a teenage child that starts to descend into violent delusion (and I mean seriously, not just liking some video game or movie), what are they to do?
Besides, what’s wrong with handing out meds? Make them cheap, available… aside from quality control and requiring disclosure of side effects, I don’t see why law enforcement need be involved.
I’m meds are wrong. I’m saying it’s easier to get guns than meds. A lot (maybe most?) of insurance doesn’t cover psychiatric care, or covers it minimally. There is a lot of social stigma attached to getting psychiatric care and meds, much more so than getting a gun. Well, maybe that’s changing now, but it was the case for my generation.
My scheme offers the advantage of more drugged people, and more guns. What could possibly go wrong?
I don’t get too involved in the gun debate mainly because I know that I’m mostly uninformed; and you certainly have a valid point here. However, it seems to me that not all gun rights advocates are paragons of virtue in this arena - there are plenty of chicken little NRA folks who act as if any legislation is a bellwether for the banning of all guns, and they spew a fair amount of vomit themselves.
For disclosure, I support the 2nd Amendment, though I do feel that it could be tweaked a bit.
The NRA is dominated by nutballs, I’ll give you that. But when you talk about moving on with gun control, you still have to contend with people like me, who may be an Ann-Coulter’s-worst-nightmare mix of gay, liberal, socialist, wealth-redistributing democrat, and most certainly not a member of the NRA, but still believe that every American should have the right to keep an assault rifle or three in their closet.
The NRA may be transforming into just another Republican party annex, but the issue it’s best known for is not so cleanly partisan. That’s why silly and pointless plans like an assault weapon ban aren’t a shoo-in.
I’ll still be hoarding high-capacity magazines, though, just in case.
Yeah? I suppose yours is better, smart guy?
Oh. Right.
Sounds like you guys oughta be carving your own firearms out of blocks of wood, then, or crafting them with hay and feces. The way the freedom-loving patriots who fought and died for America’s freedom to be free did, back in the olden days. Back when people wore silly-looking tricorne hats and were given to making bombastic soliloquies about freedom and tyranny and stuff, whether or not it was relevant to the actual topic of discussion. Turbulent times that must have been pretty annoying to live in.
Therapy is more expensive than a course of drugs and the APA maintains that primary case physicians (GPs) are more likely to hand out drugs than psychiatrists. A 2012 meta-analysis found that antidepressants were actually ineffective compared to a placebo, while earlier analyses found that they were useful for the most severely depressed when used in conjunction with therapy (Cecil just did a column on this, actually).
Hey 2nd Amendment lovers ! It’s always a great day when a fellow gun enthusiast gets to exercise his God-given right to discharge his weapon. Gotta admit, this would have been a Gold Star Event but hell’s bells- the tactician…I mean Patriot… I mean Defender only killed two of his four targets.
Why, he needs better training. That’s it. Finer and more comprehensive training would have insured that he achieved his kill list when he decided to shoot volunteer firefighters who were responding to a call.
So, it’s a Silver Star Day for the N.R.A. Better luck next time - and it is a fair guess that next time will come in the next 24 hours. So buck up- maybe next time the full kill list will be completed !!!
Fucking murdering bastards.
I await the NRA press conference where they call for firefighters to carry guns.
As someone on Facebook pointed out, it’s very curious that we seem to have missed the press conference after the Trayvon Martin shooting where Mr. Lapierre called for young black men to carry guns.
He was exercising his second amendment right to defend against people trying to break into his home.
I see those wonderful open-minded gun owners are now petitioning the White House to deport Piers Morgan. They shore do loves that Constitution. Or at least one half of one Amendment.
