A strange request, I know…
I’m starting to build a scale model AQM-37A missile, commonly known as the Jayhawk. It was a target drone used by the US Navy - essentially they sent it out and then tried to shoot it down. There were hundreds of these produced, and there are a couple in museums in CA and Hawaii:
-
Navel Air museum, Barbers Point, at Kalaeloa Airport.
-
Yanks Air Museum, Chino California
There may be others, but I’m not aware of them.
I’d LOVE it if anyone is visiting these museums in the next few months, if they could take some photos for me. I need some overall views, as well as whatever close-ups you can get.
I’m expecting this thread to drop rapidly into obscurity, but you never know…
Thanks in advance!
It’s not the same as the KAQ-1 drone, is it? That’s at Castle Air Museum in California.
Sadly, no… the AQM-37 A was a jet-propelled drone, capable of Mach speeds. It was made by Beechcraft, with an engine by Rayethon.
Here’s a link to a pic - I need more detailed closeups though…

Thanks Shayna
Yes, that’s the one. Mine will be a 1/5 scale much like your first link (although scratch-built, not from a kit). Your second link is the one at Barber’s point.
The other two links I’ve seen as well… The Gates brothers are some crazy, crazy dudes. Those photos are of a FULL scale 14 foot model that they launched with some mighty powerful engines… They must have a ton of money and time…
(Just checked… from their website:
" With a half billion dollars in annual revenue and nearly 2000 employees scattered around the globe, being Xircom’s CEO kept D pretty busy, but in 2001 he sold Xircom to Intel and now has plenty of spare time to devote to his family, and of course his new habit, I mean hobby, rocketry."
OK, I’m not jealous or anything…
Just to clarify…
I need some pictures of the actual missile, particularly close-ups of some of the more detailed parts. In a scale competition, these things count! I have found a few wide angle shots on-line, as well as information about the major dimensions. Detailed info is much harder to come by.
Thanks
