But now I’m torn–there’s another model of the TV that’s $50 more, but has a glossy finish and I don’t know what I should go for! Does glossy really look that much better than matte? And how bad can glare be on glossy–is it only noticeable when the screen is displaying dark content? (Also, are CRTs usually glossy? If so, then it doesn’t seem to be a problem on my current 27")
In my opinion, the glossy looks “oooh shiny!” but is less practical for viewing. Glossy screens = more reflected light on the screen. Lamps, light fixtures, sunlight from windows, etc., will all play in their brillance on the screen you are trying to watch. I went with a matte screen and have absolutely no regrets. The picture is brilliant and the various light sources have minimal impact on the viewing quality.
ETA: In the old days of big rear-projection t.v.'s I did the same thing. The model I had purchased did not have a screen protector so I went with an after-market professional installed one. Also in matte.
I would agree with Munch. I think a glossy screen is like a glossy magazine; Unless you’re sitting at just the right angle, its too reflective to enjoy.
