From that generation, I’d throw Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings into the mix.
While very important, I’d put Haggard and Jennings on the next rung down,
I Don’t Need No Rocking Chair is one of my favorites that George did later in his career. He really lived up to that too. He was still touring up until a few weeks ago.
George Jones & Georgette Jones - “You and Me and Time”
Georgette reconnected with her dad just a few years ago. I’ve read they got pretty close since then. I really like Georgette’s music too.
Dolly Parton tweeted
You never really got George Jones’ music until you had had your heart broken. Sure, he did some fun stuff (White Lightnin’ is the first to come to mind) but his cry-in-your-beer-she-done-left-me-'cause-I-effed-up numbers were the ones that let you know that your weren’t alone in your heartbreak.
He was fun to jam with the one occasion I had to share the stage with him (totally by surprise, he showed up at BigBro’s small nightclub one night).
RIP, Possum
George Jones is on my list of the three essential (male) country singers:
Hank Williams legitimized country music.
George Jones defined it.
George Strait perfected it.
