Perfect thread title. RIP to a great singer.
Yeah, wow - an icon as a singer - he created great music and had a legendarily sloppy-rogue life…RIP George.
Are they sure he’s really dead? He might just be faking it.
Playing Possum, you mean?
He’s one of those people who make you wonder “How the hell did he make it to 81?”
The photo in the NYT makes him look like perhaps Jim Carrey is his illegitimate son. The man was truly an icon of country music and hard living. How he made it to 81 is a mystery.
No matter what else he did after it, for me he was always White Lightning
The poster boy for hard living is resting now.
I heard that this year would be his last tour. I guess he just ran out of gas. He had one heck of a wild ride in life. R.I.P.
I’ve actually been thinking about him recently, as I’ve been seeing possums at work. In fact, a possum died last night in my mom’s back yard, and it made me think of him. If the song referenced in the thread title comes on the radio, I have to pull over to the shoulder. That’ll go doubly for the next few days.
Did They Place a Wreath Upon his Door?
He was born with a broken arm, took 83 drunken takes to get White Lightning right and when his wife hid all the car keys drove his lawnmower to get to the liquor store. Yep, that kind of livin’ will give you lots to sing about. I’m sorry to have only seen George on TV.
He had about four songs that would be in my all-time top 20 country classics.
- She thinks I still care.
- Golden Ring(with Tammy Wynette)
- He stopped lovin her today
- Two story house
Wow…sorry to hear this. RIP
Three music giants, all gone, having some fun: George Jones, Ray Charles and Chet Atkins - We Didn’t See A Thing
I haven’t cried this much since Tammy died.
Jerry Lee Lewis lives yet!

Special bonus activity: spot the young Johnny Paycheck
RIP George. He may not have been the most consistent, but at his best he was the best, and one of the most important singers of the 20th century. Only Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, and possibly Willie Nelson, can compare in terms of influence.
