Heading to Portland, Maine

What should I do while I’m there? I’m heading up on Friday afternoon, leaving Monday morning, so I’ll have all day and night on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday looks like rain, so I could use some indoor suggestions, too.

Interests: boat cruises, live music, cool bar scenes, outdoorsy stuff. I’ll probably spend at least part of Sunday in a microbrewery watching football.

Bonus question: Which microbrewery has tons of wood in the back and pretty cheap tasters? Is it Shipyard?

I may not be able to respond much today, but I’ll be reading responses with interest! Thanks!

Maybe you shouldn’t go: Hurricane Lee will affect the area–and it is possible it could change course and hit the area directly.

Fifteen Best Things to Do in Portland, ME

Warning: If you entertain any notions of swimming in the sea, the water is freezing. LOL

If you like cooking, I recommend a stop into Skordo, which has all kinds of great spices, spice mixes, rubs, and flavored salts and sugars. And right across the street is Cheese Louise, which features all kinds of luxe grilled cheese sandwiches.

My daughter and her husband did a goofy end of summer vacation thing a few weeks ago. A week in Florida, then a week in Maine.

The ocean in Florida was uncomfortably warm. The ocean in Maine was uncomfortably cold.

Perhaps they should find the geometric midpoint between both and try there. LOL

From personal experience, learn to pronounce the city as “Pwät-lin,” and you’ll fit right in, ayuh?

So Portland has a different pronunciation in Portland, Maine compared to Portland, Oregon?

If you like boat cruises, check out the Portland Schooner. I took my family earlier this year and it was a lot of fun. It sails for about two hours around the harbor on a sail boat from the 1920s.

Probably depends on how thick your New England accent is.

Thanks!
And, thanks everyone else! I’m monitoring Lee’s progress pretty obsessively.

You should consider Portland, Oregon—the dream of the ’90s is alive in Portland. It’s where young people go to retire.

Didn’t occur to me to ask the locals about Portland, Oregon. Maybe some Dopers here can clue us in.

Best bookstore in the world.

We were there about 4 years ago for several days. One day was spent driving to Acadia National Park, about 3 hours away. Well worth the drive, although you probably don’t have an entire day for the round trip.

We own a house in Bar Harbor that we rent most of the year, but definitely spend a few weeks in the shoulder- and off-seasons there. Love it there!

Is this a parody post? Portland Oregon is where young people go to sleep, and shit, in the streets and die of fentantyl. Portland is the Kensington Ave, Pa of the northwest.

It’s a line from the linked Portlandia song. Obviously a parody.

How was it? What did you end up doing?

We have a great time! The hurricane was a no-show, with a pretty pleasant day on Saturday, no rain, no real wind.

We went to a bunch of microbreweries, did a brewery bus tour, lobster boat trip, listened to tons of live music, some local shopping. Fun stuff!

Excellent. I looked at a lobster boat trip the last time we went up, but ended up doing the schooner instead. Did you catch lobsters?
