Headphones and Win 2000

My PC just got Windows 2000 and now I get lots of noise and static in my headphones. I run them out the back of the PC - it looks like there’s an audio line in, an audio line out, and a mic in. I run the headphones out the audio line out.

When I had Windows 95, there was no static. Now there is. It’s not that loud, but it is annoying. Why is this, and is there anything I can do to fix it? It doesn’t go away when I mute the audio on the PC, and the headphones work fine when I use them with other stereos. The PC/LAN guys here at work couldn’t help me out and I wasn’t able to get any help at the MS site. Can anybody help me out?

Not directly familar with Win2000 but if it has the same type of sound control applet as Win98 and WinME go into the recording options and make sure all the mike inputs are muted or otherwise defeated. Make sure any mike gain options are defeated as well.

Thanks, Astro - that was it.
