Heads up for the best meteor shower of 2007

Story here: Space.com.

Hopefully it won’t be cloudy! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ooh. I will make a note. If clear, I will be outside, looking up! Thanks for the heads up. Um… literally!

Yeah, I’m really hoping it’ll be clear… it’s been raining on and off the last couple of days here in sunny SoCal. I don’t have to work the next day either, so I’m clear to stay up late! I do have a doctor’s appointment the next morning, so I’ll probably have to call it a night around 1 or 2 AM, depending on how good the show is.

Where I live, it seems likely that it will.

Rats.

I saw a terrific Leonid meteor shower in Vermont some years ago. Clear night with no moon. At the peak, we were seeing 40 to 50 per minute. About 1 in 5 left a persistent trail. It was a perfectly still night, so it was possible to watch the show reflected in the surface of a nearby lake.

Sweet. Chances are it’ll be cloudy, but if not, I’m throwing on 2 pairs of long johns, heavy coat, hat and gloves, some blankets and hot coffee, and gonna watch me some space rocks burn up.

Joe Rao (Ray-o) is on our local cable news channel here. The dress up warm and bring hot beverages part is good advice.

gently bumping thread for those who may not have seen it… may do the same on Thursday as well…

Do ya’ll think I’ll be able to see many here in Michigan?

It will probably be too cloudy here. But it was coudy during the August meteor shower and we could still see a few.

Thanks for the heads-up. To clarify, is the best time to see this (from the East coast of the US) going to be the night of the 13th/14th, after full dark? Or the 14th/15th?

The article somewhat confused me on the issue.

Sailboat

Yes, the night of 13th/14th. I’ll be watching the 14th from the Connecticut Coast with a cup of hot cider and multiple layers.

Well, all y’all in the mid-Atlantic can blame me for not getting to see it… For the entirety of my life, every single freaking cool thing that could only be seen in the sky for a limited time has been obscured by clouds. Comets, meteor showers, eclipses, planet alignments…doesn’t matter. If I’m where it supposedly can be seen, there will be clouds.

If there were a year-long event in the Atacama Desert, and I was there, it would rain every frecking day for a year, guaranteed.

Properly marketed, this could be a valuable talent.

bump again

Cloudy here. Here being Azerbaijan.

It’s mostly clear here… but it’s only about 9AM; who knows what it’s going to be like 12 hours from now.

Cloudy in Mississippi. Darn it.
I would love to see it but I think the clouds are going to hold here.

Anyone know where to be looking when in the southern hemisphere (yeah I know know, up at the sky), or if they will be visible from down here?

At my old house I would have been wrapped up in a blanket while laying in the hammock. I would have been out there for hours…

But this year I live to close to a town that has a lot of lights. :frowning: Sucks.

Hope all you enjoy it though.

Should be visible from the southern hemisphere, far as I know. As for where to look: yeah, just up…

BrknButterfly, where do you live in ME? I used to live there… pretty easy to find dark skies if you’re willing to drive a little bit.
