Healing fingers

I broke jammed my pinky finger (or so I thought) about a year ago it seemed to be healing ok, most of the pain went away. Now it’s slightly bent and I can not straighten it, and I feel a little bit of pain when I try to make a fist. Should I be worried that I may need corrective surgery?

Have you seen a doctor, or are you just sitting at home worrying?

Reported for forum change.

Really? You waited a year and NOW you have concerns? Short of rebreaking it and setting it correctly, what exactly do you think can be done after all this time? Do you think your Dr has a magic wand?

Why DIDN’T you go to a Dr when it was a fresh break and could have been easily addressed?

(If I was your health insurance provider I think I’d be tempted to make you pay all associated costs, in the hope you’d get smarter! Also because why should they pay to break and reset etc, when it would have been a simple thing to fix initially?)

Good Luck, I think you’ll need it!

Maybe its a tissue injury not a bone injury.

‘slightly bent’ suggests its a torn tendon. Its possible the pain you feel is the torn tendon being pulled away from where it normally sits.

I would have thought a broken and displaced bone would result in swelling even infection.

You’ve probably straightened that finger enough already, and a bit of pain when you try to make a fist should be acceptable. I’d continue to ignore it. Further treatment won’t improve the quality of your life. Now, if you were a concert pianist or a guitarist, maybe.

Dang it, I thought this would be about some fancy massage technique.

My professional opinion (as a “not a real doctor”) is to remember to offset the crooked finger by flexing the wrist appropriately when you point. Otherwise, people will go the wrong way and become lost. Starvation and death will result and the ensuing pestilence will wipe out mankind.

Otherwise, no big deal.

How old are you and what other pains do you get from “bone problems”?

I have osteoarthritis and am quite used to bone pain.

About a month ago, I awoke from pain in my left hand. The CPAP hose had gotten well and truly woven through the fingers. The rest of the hand healed overnight.
The pinky is just as you describe - will not align with other fingers, and produces real pain trying.

So far my (Medicare) doc has provided a brace and referred me to an “ENT” (?) test of nerve conductivity. I specially asked for an Ortho Surgeon - surgeons know their stuff.

I have a twist (get it?) in that the pain sometimes extends to the elbow and sometimes to the shoulder. So far, it has not jumped the shoulder joint.

Get to a real doctor. You are a grown-up now, and you should have a PCP with whom to discuss this and everything else medical.
(except suicide in CA (long story))

Is it just the tip that won’t straighten like mallet finger? You may need a splint and to see an Occupational Therapist, you shouldn’t have waited so long. You may need surgery if it healed incorrectly.
