Health Insurance

Does anyone know, or have, a decent medical coverage plan that is not through work? I quit my permanent job and started working temp, so I have no benefits. I have been looking at some, but they are really expensive. I have found a few for like 50 bucks a month, but my friends say that in order to get covered I would have to go to “some quack like Dr. Nick”. Anyone?

AFAIK, horhay_achoa, most insurance companies operate on a state-by-state basis, so the answer to your question is going to depend heavily upon where you live.

So in the interest of keeping this thread in GQ instead of IMHO, may I suggest rewording your question as “What are some insurance companies I can buy directly from in X,” where X is your location?

Hope this helps.

Funny you ask. A saleswoman called last evening during dinner, selling Golden Rule insurance. Says it’s low cost and for people in between jobs. Told her I don’t need it, but you might want to check it out on the Net.

E-mail weirddave, he’s in this sort of business.

Most major insurers do sell individual policies. These vary in cost depending on what you want to cover. If you’re basically healthy, and all you want is emergency care and preventive office visits, it’ll be cheaper than if you went whole-hog. These companies include Blue Cross and Blue Shield of your state, Aetna/US Healthcare and United Healthcare. All of them can be found on the Web.

Also, I know State Farm offers health insurance, so talk to a State Farm rep. You might also try talking to an independent insurance agent who can price several different companies.

Off to IMHO…

This is exactly what I do. E-mail me. Don’t go with Golden Rule unless you like to be bait and swiched, that company is famous for “low” prices that skyrocket. They don’t have a very good Consumer Reports rating. Please, drop me a line, and I’ll be glad to help you out, I’ve done it for others on the boards. Weirddave0@hotmail.com
