Heard on a radio broadcast from 1994..

This may seem silly, and I must stress that I was not drinking.

In 1994, I was driving to my parents house when the radio station at the top of the hour played the “news”. According to the news report a nuclear weapon had exploded at a Russian military base. Early reports had 3,000 people dead. The reporter stated that undertrained military personnel were attempting to disarm the nuclear weapon with an icepick. It went on to state that they were so poorly trained, that the weapon could just as easily been launched as exploded. And these same early reports were that this missle had been pointed at New York City.

It was like a news broadcast, “We will keep you updated.” I arrived at my Dad’s house, and he was in the garage working on a project. I asked him if he heard the “news” and he said no, he had been outside. We went in an turned on CNN, and, of course, nothing.

I’ve been wracking my brain on this for 13 years. Was that the plot of a play, movie, or TV show from that time, and I mistook the “news report” as an advert? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated…

Could it have been April 1, 1994?

I was living in West Virginia at the time. And it could have been April 1st, but that would have been one hell of a thing for a radio station to make an April Fools joke out of…Hmm…

It might not have been the station’s creation. There have been numerous pranks created by one news outlet that get picked up and reported as fact by others. Snopes has several such cases in its records.
