One of the cheese makers I follow is in Canada and explains how to use bagged milk in each video because us yanks get so distracted by it. It’s just regular cow milk in a plastic bag instead of a plastic bottle.
He can make cheddar cheese out of bagged milk and I can’t make the damn stuff with fresh from the cow milk. I am such a failure!
Bagged milk IS fresh milk. When I was a kid, a chain of drive-thru dairy stores sold bagged milk. It came in a heavy-duty cardboard box. There was a tab you pull to access the bag, and that is where you popped in your reusable spout.
The next door neighbor used a lot of the bagged milk. Four kids, you see. The oldest was my best friend, and during the summer her mom would send us down to Mrs Moo’s (the drive-thru dairy store) to buy milk. Sometimes we could wheedle her mom for some change to get us root beer popsicles.
Bagged milk is the cheapest way to buy a gallon in many Canadian provinces. Cartons are reserved for half and quarter gallons (the metric equivalents, more or less). Jugs are seen more rarely. Bags are a pain, but almost half the price of boxes.
So it’s that they are cheaper. Not because they are necessarily loved. Though some likely do.
Oh, gosh, I had forgotten about that stuff. Mom used to get it from the store after the milk truck stopped running. (I have fond memories of the bread truck man showing Mom a tray of donuts so we could pick out a treat.)
I’m not quite old enough to remember trading milk bottle caps around, the heavy glass bottles of milk we had delivered had screw tops.
Helms Bakery! The toot-toot of the Helms truck was so different than anyone else! I remember the beautiful polished wood of the drawers that held all the bakery products! And the yummy smells of yeast breads, donuts, and cookies!
Milk is heavy, If you’re shopping on foot or bicycle, having to carry an extra kilo every day is annoying. I know people who rent a car to do their monthly shop* for groceries, including flour, beverages and other items that can be stored for weeks. UHT milk means adding the milk to the monthly shop instead of the daily shop.
*I went to the mobility site for linking, and the top ad is for doing a monthly shop.
Looking forward to it. Are you in the FR, GE, IT or RM speaking area?
