Just out of curiosity…
Are West Coasters considered damnyankees as well? Or are we just plain weird? My sister’s boyfriend lives in rural Virginia, and I figure I’ll be travelling out there sooner or later.

I don’t think the West Coast even charts on our DamnYankee scale, though you might get an eyeroll and “damn idiots from California”…
Unfortunately, AllShookDown, I don’t have enough information on my great-great-grandmother to look her up on the Dawes roll. She may well have been raised in white society, since my grandmother’s only living cousin also has no memory of her being Native American in anything other than appearance. I guess I should do some investigating before all the people who actually knew her are gone!
The West Coast doesn’t count as Yankeedom – doesn’t count as ANYTHING, as far as I can tell (at least not to my Texas relatives), although if you’re from Oregon or Washington state you’ll probably get lumped in as a Yankee by default. But California is considered the land of weirdos, not really part of ANYTHING, as far as I can tell.
Rural Virginia can be VERY rural. That’s where I saw all the cock-fighting roosters. My former boss, from the Roanoke area, gets very upset every time I send her a “you know you’re a redneck if” list, even though she sends them to me, too! If you can figure out a way to adopt some protective coloration, it does help – in my case, I can turn on a Texas accent in a heartbeat, which keeps us from sticking out too badly (Papa Tiger’s Minnesota origins are evident the moment he opens his mouth).

And that’s the latest from the Department of Redundancy Department. Need…more…coffee…
I hope that experiences like Khadaji’s are rare, and increasingly so.
elfkin477 said this concerning the importance of the Revolutionary War in the North:
As a full-blooded Southerner, I can say the same about the Civil War. When I hear the phrase “The South Will Rise Again,” I think of it in terms of economic success and importance, or cultural impact-- not slavery or bigotry by any means.
I agree with what thatDDperson said about Reconstruction being more of the culprit for good ole Southern nostalgia than the War itself. What Nichol_storm said in her second post was great: it summed up all of my feelings regarding the criticism of the Southern ‘inability to forgive and forget.’
Can’t even code right this morning! :smack: (Note to self: Do not attempt intelligent communication while still on the first cup.)
