When I watched it as a younger kid it was one of those movies that made me feel like I was getting away with something. The New York story was my favorite back then. My friends and I probably laughed at the line, “I’m not going to go through this place with my dork hanging out” (paraphrased) for probably two weeks straight.
Haven’t seen it maybe more than a decade. I am guessing it doesn’t hold up…
I saw it on its original run when I was a rutting 15-year-old male, and enjoyed it very much. Saw it a few more times in college as a midnight movie. Haven’t seen it in over 30 years, so I’m not sure how I’d feel now. Most of the soundtrack still holds up.
I also loved Wizards when I saw it in junior high and numerous times in high school. I watched it again in my late 20s. It did not age well, or maybe I didn’t. Not sure which.
The first time I saw Wizards, it was on a double-bill with Fantastic Planet, which absolutely bored the shit out of 12-year-old me. Given the acclaim that film has, I wonder if I should give it another try. Maybe I was too young to get it, or maybe it really is boring and overrated.
Fantastic Planet is a favorite of mine. Oddly, l’d never thought to compare it to Heavy Metal, but I could see doing that double-bill some evening.
Whereas Heavy Metal is fun on an adolescent level, Fantastic Planet is damn trippy and surreal. There’s a lot of interesting detail in the background. And a much more serious movie, except that the animation reminds me of Sesame Street - I think they used a similar technique to some of the shorts many of us remember as kids.
