Actually, elf6c wasn’t just whistling Dixie – there really was a very similar thread four or five months ago. Predictably, it fast became a transparent excuse for bug-stupid screwheads to vent the equivalent of “blacks really are criminals” and “gays deserve their AIDS” and other ignorant shit. It got locked toward the bottom of the second page. Of course, I can’t find it now…
I was going to post a thread in the Pit about how I despised threads like that. The concept of posting an idea that is sure to meet with resistance while at the same time postulating that no debate is allowed is the antithesis of the ideals of the Straight Dope, and, by extension, the message board.
Boo, I say. BOOOOOO!
Fuck you. As for the “teachers make to[sic] much money”, tell that to the teachers I had in grade school-who were forced to take second, part time retail jobs just to make ends meet. FUCK YOU.
Mental illness doesn’t exist? Where’s your fucking degree, asshat?
Um, the 4th ammendent doesn’t have anything to do with guns, dumbass.
Just an excuse to be assholes, methinks.
“unpopular or unorthodox views” my ass. It’s more than anything “Post your asinine, devoid of fact, views here and know that someone will have to open a new thread to properly flay you for being a fuckwhistle”.
This one here was mine, and the reason I don’t think people should have the right to vote, is that I think people should have to earn it with a test of some sort. The fact is, I think people take their right to vote far too lightly. I’ve got no problem debating any single thing I said, I didn’t realise it said no debating in the OP otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have even posted. I guess that was my fault for not reading it close enough.
This isn’t an apology, I just don’t like being sworn at.
I posted in that thread before it started to utterly disintegrate. Now I wish I could take back my post, although I don’t withdraw what I said. (It was quite reasonable, trust me. )
An interesting dynamic going on in that other thread. At first I thought it was kind of nice how the more out-there views weren’t being ripped. Now, I’d like to start about 27 pit threads, one after the other. That thread was a bad idea and I’m sure it will be closed quite soon.
Oh, and I too have to reconsider my opinion of several posters.
Hey now, as a constitutional monarchist, I take exception to your suggestion that this one is absurd
This one sounds like it came from L. Ron Hubbard. This is exactly the line the $cientologists have been toting about psychiatry for decades. Makes me want to pour through that thread and see who wrote it, start being more suspicious of that poster…but that wouldn’t be in line with the spirit of that thread, so I’ll be fair and restrain myself. I seem to be jumping to alot of conclusions today.
If ignorance is bliss, then there’s some blissful futhermuckers on that thread. I especially liked this:
“Citizens should be required to perform some form of community service for the benefit of their nation (military service, corps of engineers, whatever). ***If they refuse then they should lose the right to vote, and their welfare benefits should be reduced/eliminated.”
Gosh, I’m so glad I didn’t post my thoughts in there about cats and electric fences! laughs That’s a joke, people…
Guin, I’m totally with you about the “teachers make way too much money” line. That’s a real gem. I read that and thought “Tell it to my mortgage payment, jerk.” Riddle me this… Why is it that professional athletes can own three mansions and teachers can barely afford to own their own modest home? Yeah, and it’s teachers who make way too much.
Gee what a shock- the thread has arrived in the Pit.
The one thing that made me laught was the dumb crack about the Constitution was in the same thread about Teachers making too much. Unintentional humor at its best.
I was surprised that some higher post count types had some rather unusual beliefs.
