Robert Heinlein wrote a short story in 1947 entitled “The Green Hills Of Earth”. I have just finished reading a story, “Shambleau”, by C. L. Moore, published in 1933in which one of the characters “…hummed “The Green Hills Of Earth” to himself…” Is this (1) just an odd coincidence, (2) a case of Heinlein borrowing the title from Moore, or (3) each of them referring to a pre-existing song (which I have been unable to track down)? Does anyone know?
According to Wikipedia
That’s funny, I just now today listed Heinlein’s short story collection of the same name in the Ten S-F Books for Complete Beginners… thread. And it’s not exactly one that comes up all that often.
“We pray for one last landing/ On the globe that gave us birth/ Let us rest our eyes on the fleecy skies/ And the cool, green hills of Earth.”
