Hell o' Weenies (October Mini-Rants)

At any rate, I, for one, appreciated it. (The font and formatting took me back to my VAX/VMS days in college.)

Sometimes a reference doesn’t hit. For those who have never seen it, I’ll just leave this here.

I have a problem with the website for my local newspaper. I use FireFox as my primary browser, and while I can read the articles and the e-edition with no problem if I try to go to the account page to do anything with my subscription or put a hold on the delivery of the paper edition it locks up so all I get is a spinning circle. However, if I go to the website using Chrome there’s no problem logging on to my account. This is the only website I have this sort of problem with.

FWIW, I thought your comment about “no math” was pretty funny! It’s the one about “wall of text” that I thought, perhaps mistakenly, was not understanding the joke.

Don’t know if this is “mini”, but after some sporadic back pains over a few days, I suddenly developed an acute stabbing pain in the lower back. To the point that it was actually difficult to move.

Fortunately, I have achieved blessed relief, at least for the moment, with the twin Elixers of the Gods: a strong Caesar, followed by a strong martini. It’s practically a miracle! :cocktail:

I had a similar problem with TurboTax a year or two ago. It wouldn’t load with Google.

I have this as a result of a broken nose. I also have allergies so breathing at night is always a problem. Now, I could get surgery if I could afford it. But one cheaper option I use is Mute nasal dilators. They really do help me. When allergy season kicks around (we are still in it), I also use allergy nasal spray. It doesn’t help every time but overall, it helps more than not. You may also want to sleep with your head elevated.

All that said, check with your doctor first. There are solutions. And cases can be made for getting insurance to kick in for surgical correction. A good night’s sleep is worth it.

Man the latest COVID booster wiped me the fuck out. I wisely decided to space it apart from my flu shot after the double whammy I got last year, but I’m still oooof. And the site of injection got big and red and swollen which never happened before either.

So I fell asleep on the couch at 6pm and probably fucked up my sleep tonight. At least Sundays are the one day a week I get to sleep in!

My son has taught me this. If there’s a number in the room, he will find it. And it there’s not, he’ll find a way to make it about numbers anyhow.

I have sinus issues, and those BreatheRight nasal strips really help. In fact, I put one on and lie down, and spend a minute blowing out all the drainage that got loosened up by having larger nasal passages.

Then I put on my CPAP, which I figure must help because it’s blowing air into my nose (and presumably, sinusus. And I lie there wondering if i could put menthol or something in the water reservoir…

I’m saying Thank You. I’ve also gone today to get sinus sprays; one even aerosol-blasts the sinus clean with a sodium spray. Tonight might be a good night… but even if it isn’t I’ve got something to clean them out at 3 AM so I can go back to sleep.

The Dr’s office is closed until Monday.

< knock on wood >

I use AYR, a saline spray.

I was all set to get sinus surgery, but the surgeon said he didn’t recommend it. It’s messy, can aggravate your sinuses, and after a few years, you’d be back to where you were anyhow. He recommended the nasal strips, NetiPot 2x/day, and Sudafed. And when things get bad, multiple hot showers and serious prescription nasal spray.

And when things get really bad, as in in sinus infections, antibiotics.

Doc said a couple of courses of Anti-Bs a year is better than surgery.

I find the Neti Pot helps, but only temporarily. It works best to get allergens loose. If Breathe Right works for you, great. I am allergic to the adhesive, which is why I rely on Mute. I do resort to sinus clearing nasal spray (Afrin) when things get really bad, but you are not supposed to use it for longer than three nights running. If you do, things get even worse. So I use it in a single nostril. The next night, I use it in the other nostril and switch off until I am over my cold. I did this successfully when I got Covid, too.

Breathright strips have never worked for me. They will not adhere to my nose. I think my nose isn’t shaped properly for them.

I use fluticasone spray which helps a lot. (It’s Flonase but I buy the generic and save money, it’s the same thing.) It’s not perfect but especially when I wake up in the morning and my nose is congested it can clear that up.

I hear the sinus surgery is only 65% successful, for a short period. I guess if you’re suffering year in and year out, daily(or nightly) 65 % sounds pretty good. To have to revisit the surgeon, in say 4 or 5 years to have another surgery reduces its effectiveness to 20%.

Not for me.

Get the good pills from the doctor and make sure to reduce your exposure to allergens.

ETA: my rant. The Lil’wrekkers boyfriend is from Palestine. Well, his Mother and Father were. (They left because of violence)He was born here. But he has been on his phone all day with them and watching CNN all day. I don’t think it’s good for him. We’ve tried to convince him it’s not gonna help anyone, if he knows anyone there, anyway. And no one here thinks he’s a terrorist. I feel terrible for him.

It is really awful. I’d have a hard time not obsessing if I were in his shoes.

I remember being very angry about “The Troubles”. I was angry about marching season and the murders… I was angry about curb-stones and City Buses set on fire. I was angry that “Invisible Sun” was banned on UK radio.

Then one day, someone slapped some sense into me:

“Oh, is that your opinion, Yank? Well excuse me… you see, I was only just Fookin’ Born here. Why don’t you away the fook back to Boston and tend your own damn country…?”
.
.
I won’t express opinions on this conflict. To support one side is to be a fascist; to support the other is to be an anti-semite.

I won’t be anyone’s Ian Paisley or Gerry Adams.

I have a very remedial understanding as to the politics of the region. I know it’s volatile and has been for many years.
I do think I can understand people. There are Americans who have a vested interest in their ethic beginnings. Heck, we all came from somewhere. (Nearly all of us).

My daughters boyfriend and his family were treated badly after 9/11 because of how they look and their names. He, specifically was bullied in school because of it. He rose above and is now a successful professor at the University near here. His family are all successful in their communities. He is the nicest person. Helpful and kind.
There are two sides to everything. He is collateral damage once removed in this whole ugly scene.
But he’s in my immediate family group and I feel terrible for him about this.

I just hate it.

I hope you got some sleep last night, and that you’re able to get an appntmnt with your dr. soon.
Sleep is so very important.
