Anyone read after Garth Ennis finished around #83? Is it any good? I dropped off then, much as I dropped off Swamp Thing when Alan Moores replacement, Rick Veitch quit over a ‘Jesus controversy’.
As I recall I liked Mike Carey’s run (175-215 ), but I’m partial to Carey’s writing generally.
Too late to edit:
Oh, and I didn’t much care for Azzarello’s. But then I’m not partial to Azzarello generally - I fine his plotting a bit aimless and his noir tropes kinda grating after awhile( I read through all of 100 Bullets thinking I liked it, than at the very end decided I didn’t ).
Heh. I see Ennis took over Hellblazer when he was 21. Jesus. And it does show, all ‘the man’ and ‘bastards in high places.’
But he also takes the piss out of people who must have been his mates and possibly himself. Created some great characters too.
I didn’t even get all the way through Ennis’s run…
You should give it another shot. I just finished my reread, and there’s tons I didn’t follow as well as a younger lad.
