I saw a one panel cartoon that was a scene at a funeral in the cemetery . A guy says to the widow “I know this is a rough time, but did he ever mention source code?”

One thing that seemed to help me get rid of the timeouts was simply closing my browser and logging in again. I don’t know if it’s a ‘coinkydink’ or not, but that’ll be my go-to until it stops working.

I do this too, but it doesn’t help just as often as it does. Mostly it just makes me feel like I’m doing something.

Doesn’t help - spent the last 30 minutes trying to log on - just log on - and no dice.

In short, I can’t use the fucking site.

Hope it changes soon or else this place is probably gonna have zero traffic.

Thankfully I havbent had to many issues… A few times when it doesnt respond and other times I get gateway timeouts, etc… One time I got a 500 error (Internal Server Error)

Its sad seeing the site having so many problems… Thank you TubaDiva for trying to make it better

Then why are you standing out in the rain with us?

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before, but I do remember that, in the past, we were told that reducing the search delay caused problems with the site. Any chance putting back would help alleviate issues? Or even disable it altogether (telling people to just use Google)?

Google searches are much more effective to find SDMB pages than the internal search function. Have been for years.

I have left the search delay at where the techs put it after one of our system crashes. If they wanted it at something else, they would have set it at something else; they chose that for a reason.

Besides, I believe at this point there is little to nothing that we can do to improve things.

Your enthusiasm to find ways to make things better is commendable. We are all in this together and help is always appreciated. But really I think we are stuck with things as they are until we change. There is nothing we can do to fix the current software.

nvm

IIRC, I remember reading here that certain mod actions, like wishing a thread into the cornfield put a load on the server. Or possibly even deleting a spammer post.

Has anyone tried to determine whether these bursts of timeouts correlates with such actions or not?

No evidence of that.

If memory serves, what caused our biggest problems in the past was the use of the built-in vBulletin search engine; that is probably the most server-intensive thing going.

Which is why we’ve said for years to use Google whenever possible.

How to search the SDMB using Google

Please remember that since that thread was originally written we’ve moved to secure HTTPS instead of HTTP (I may have missed one updating).

Avoid using vBulletin search and see if that doesn’t help.

Wishing a thread into the cornfield doesn’t load the server much unless it’s a really big thread. If it’s just a post or two, no biggie.

We keep records of everything we do, and all of the records of spammers were going into one thread. Updating that thread was actually putting a heavy load on the server. We have since switched to a new thread to ease the load on the server, so that is no longer an issue.

(I’m just going to keep throwing stuff out there until maybe something sticks.)

I noticed sometime last year while I was still in “guest” mode that I could do searches here. Something I thought guests weren’t allowed to do. I used it from time to time but decided not to ask about it in case other guests heard about it and decided to do searches as well.

Was this planned/known about/has an effect on board performance?

Denying Guests the use of the search function is not a sufficient incentive to get them to be Members; it would tend to make them abandon the board altogether because what’s the point?

Let’s not do that.

why not just make everyone use a google search?

The Google search, while extensive, is not convenient nor intuitive.

There is no evidence that the VB search function is the cause of the problem. It would be the same as prohibiting anyone with an “B”, “J” or"D" in their username from posting. It might fix things, or it might not.
