I just sent you a pony. Please be home, you have to sign for it.
Today really has been a bad day, I tried three times to respond to this thread (usually I don’t wait for the error message, when I see that it’s hanging I just go somewhere else and try again later). So I just want to thank nelliebly for starting this thread, since the other thread has been going so long I sort of assumed that further complaining was pointless and that no-one was listening.
I like this thread… it loaded!
Perhaps if the PTB are not wanting to upgrade… would they consider a revamp of the archives? And archive older threads from say 5 years and older?
But that doesn’t really explain posts posted this (day/week/month) not loading.
Unless all those smart threads (not threats) that fought ignorance are now in high demand? I can believe that…
I’m going to suck the most I can from paying for a membership for as long as this group exists or until… well, I get tired of trying to read (I don’t post much). <–true threat cos… I love this place but if anyone sticks around I know where to read synopsis.
(I copied this in case when I click Post… it doesn’t.)
as long as the money keeps flowing in from the ads they have no reason to fix it quickly. As they said in watergate, follow the money
It could be a hardware problem. I don’t know what they have for servers or how old. Not enough hard drive space can have some surprising effects, and old servers are … well, OLD. Our Powerschool server is so old it’s actually a SCSI (“scuzzy”) server from the turn of the century. Let’s just say that it’s “cranky”.
On another site Im on this is happening (Also VBB) and the admin said its search engines and robots bogging it down… I wonder if that could be going on here also?
The thing I dont understand is he has all bot UAs blocked in his robots.txt file (User agent *) and they are still getting on somehow… Its aggravating!
Thankfully the site usually seems OK when I come…
EDIT:
I just got a 502 error
I keep trying to post a link where you can access a substantial amount of money, in small, unmarked bills, but I got too many timeouts.
Regards,
Shodan
It’s getting worse if anything. I’m reaching a point where I’m soon going to give up on the board until it gets fixed, it’s too frustrating.
As someone suggested a while ago, if funds are needed for hardware or whatever, I’d contribute and I’m sure many others would too.
Now I want a unicorn. Farting rainbows.
Jenny
If you pronounce her name with a long “I” then it is “Tuba Diver” with maybe a Bronx accent.
Vexed?
Horny
I would also like to step forward and express my support for Riemann contributing funds to fix the boards.
I would be in favor of giving Riemann some sort of recognition; maybe a custom title or honorary moderator status, to thank him for his very generous donation.
Is Pimp of the year still a title they give out?
Whatever they’re doing to fix it, they’re making it worse. I wonder how many people we’re losing because of this. I may be the next.
Does SDMB have a dedicated server? Or is it shared with other sites? In the latter case, have the episodes been correlated with activity on the other sites?
Is there any reason NOT to assume that SDMB traffic simply exceeds the resource allocated?
Occasionally I get the “Board temporarily offline for maintenance” banner. Is that a sign that the server is being rebooted, or that something is being done to try to fix the issue, or is it just another symptom?
Regards,
Shodan
If I’m following this right … post #8 indicates that Sun-Times Media is using a vendor called DesertNews to host this board. I would expect that means the SDMB shares space with other entities on a remote server (or set of servers) somewhere. Accordingly, it seems that the SDMB is at the mercy of DesertNews and that our own SDMB staffers are well outside of the loop.
It appears to be no longer the case that the SDMB is hosted on its own server, controlled by The Chicago Reader or another proximate entity. I’m not sure that ever was the case. But it seemed in the past (say, before the sale of the Reader to Creative Loafing [2008-ish?]) that Tubadiva and other SDMB staff were in much closer and more frequent contact with at-hand IT assistance – even on a first-name basis (remember ‘Jerry’?).
That’s not a symptom of the problem – that’s a purposeful message indicating that something is being attempted. Not necessarily remediation … but something requiring the board’s tables to be unavailable.
TBTB, please pay attention! I’m sure we’re losing members because of this. Today has been particularly bad. It’s great when it’s working, but the periods of long delays and timeout messages have been very frequent the entire day. Furthermore, the problem is much older than the two-month age of the previous thread – at least four months, I’d say, though not usually as bad as today.
ETA: Error: Server error while trying to post the above!
Thanks for the announcement re the maintenance.
About the unicorn. I’m working on it.
So far I’ve got what looks like a large dog with a tumor on its forehead.
And explosive green diarrhea.
But I’m getting close.
