I used to say I never got errors or had all the problems other people had (windows 10, firefox current). Probably I gloated. Since the “fix” the other day I am mostly unable to log in. I guess payback is a bitch or something. I give up.
shud jus say was gud now f*d
Fix this fucking shit!
Can you all goddamn fix this??!?!?!?!
Just for the record: I had no idea that the previous two posts even went through b/c it timed out both times.
Seriously, I know I’m being offensive, but I actually care enough to post - a lot of other posters are done forever.
Please, fix this!!!
When I wrote that, it was not clear to me that they had decided to change the software. It was only an idea to continue working within the confines of the current system.
And the entire point of the whole “least frequently used” idea was to mitigate exactly what you are talking about. If they haven’t been linked to externally before, then chance are they’re not going to be in the future. The stuff that gets a lot of hits would stay in, the stuff that doesn’t would not.
There’s also no reason that the new, leaner forum couldn’t have a new URL, and the old URLs link to the archived version with a link on the bottom to the new URL which would open a new post on the new URL with an automatic link to the archive.
Yes, upgrading to new forum software is a better long term solution, if they’re willing to do it. But it was not clear to me that they had decided to do that, so I was presenting another option, one that I’ve seen other sites use successfully.
Please, please read this.

This is the same thing I have said upthread and in nearly every thread in ATMB these days. I’m sorry you missed it.
This board is not going to be “fixed.” It can’t be fixed.
But we can move on to what is next and that is coming. Not as fast as any of us would like, but this ain’t like changing your brand of coffee or your underwear; it’s more like buying a new car. It takes time to do it right.

Thanks, TD. Actually working quite a bit better today, I’ve found.
I will say this: it’s a pretty interesting experiment of sorts, even if a presumably unintentional one. Assuming everyone is having roughly the same amount of trouble I have been having, it kind of amazes me that this whole place hasn’t turned into Tumbleweed Gulch. But I’m one of the ones persisting–even as it frustrates me and makes me spend far longer trying to engage with the board than I really have time for! So its continued existence in the face of these headwinds is actually quite complimentary to the board as an entity/community, albeit obviously not as a technical platform.
I have learned that when you make a post and the board just sits there and stares at you stupidly… ignore it and go back up to the forum link, or main message board link, or whatever. Then go back into the thread you were trying to post to and see that your post probably did go through.
In general I have far fewer problems, which may have to do with the amount of time I’m on the board (not that much) and the time of day. But I’ve noticed that the number of posts is going down. Before it would be 2 pages, or more, and now it is sometimes even less than 1.
I happy happy that so many people are persevering. I already lost one board community and would like to keep this one.
@Tuba Diva: thank you for the global announcement. I’ve seen your comments in this thread and appreciate you sharing what you know.
(I guess @ doesn’t do the same here as in Outlook. Oh well.)
Jenny,
Thank you for your explanations throughout this thread, and in the other thread on 50x errors, and for that one-off post.
Much appreciated!

Does anyone know which table is being locked out and for what purpose the table is being updated? Depending on what is driving the lock, it may be possible to tweak the config so it doesn’t happen as often. For example, if it’s doing a large bulk commit of updates, it may be possible to have it do commits more frequently so they are smaller and won’t lock the table as long.
Earlier I suggested extending the edit window from 5 to 10 or 15 minutes, but now I’m thinking maybe disable editing altogether.
I remember the days before post editing, and while I prefer the 5 minute window in a perfect world, it’s not that world. No editing worked for years, and could again.
If editing posts contributes to the locking problem, there’s no law that says we have to keep editing.
I really don’t think it will make that big a difference. Especially at this point.
But thanks.

Actually, it kind of is.
Assuming everyone is having roughly the same amount of trouble I have been having, it kind of amazes me that people are snarling, let alone threatening to take their marbles and go home and apparently in some cases doing so.
The amount of trouble I’ve been having is that sometimes when I click on something, I then have to refresh the page a minute or so later; at which point it’ll probably work fine. If I click to post a comment and get an error, the comment’s probably already posted, so instead of refreshing the page it works better to go back to the thread itself and reopen that, which again usually works just fine. Any of this may not happen at all for several days, though when it does happen it may happen in batches; but even when it happens in batches, it’s generally fine a little while later.
This strikes me as being on the level of a minor nuisance. I therefore tend to assume that not everyone is having the same amount of trouble; though it’s also possible that we have varying ideas of what’s a minor nuisance.
I’m not on the board continuously, but I am on it fairly often, and the timing is pretty random except that it’s rarely between, say, 1AM and 7AM Eastern USA time.
