So I got the Doom Trillogy Edition that is a special for Doom 3.
I found that you can play Doom online against other Doom Troopers.
I started about a month ago, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out how they do it.
I know a variety of factors come into play, but in general, I get less than 10 frags a round, (Death Match) when everyone else gets near 40.
What angles do I use, when do I shoot, How do I get to the sides of my oppoent faster… etc.
What keyboard layout is best? (My laptop has only one control key, and the INS and Delete key next to the arrow keys) Ive got the touchpad buttons easily within my thumbs reach.
What websites are there for learning the ropes?
Is this your first multiplayer First Person Shooter?
For keyboard layout, most people like the WASD layout. Your left hand controls the keyboard, and your right hand controls a mouse.
The WS keys are used for forward and backward movement, and the AD keys are used for strafing left and right. I usually use the middle three fingers for this control, and I use my pinky to control the shift and control keys and my thumb for the space bar and some of the lower keys like XCVB. These are usually bound to things like running, jumping, ducking, etc.
With a mouse, the mouse controls the direction where you move as well as for aiming. The mouse buttons are used for shooting and for secondary weapon uses (sniping, grenade launcher, etc). You can also use your scroll wheel for switching between different guns.
For example, if I want to move forward I hit the W key. If I want to move to the left I use my mouse to turn my view to the left and then hit my W key. If I want to run around in a circle with my gun always pointed in the middle of the circle, I would strafe using my A or D key and use my mouse to keep my view in the middle of the circle.
If you’re using a touchpad instead of a mouse, I strongly suggest you get an external mouse for gaming. You’ll find it much easier to control and your frags will be that much sweeter.
Remember that this is Doom2, so there’s no Z-axis movement to aim, so mouselook is less useful. There’s also no crouching and no jumping. In a more recent FPS I’d fully suggest the WASD layout with mouselook and a scroll button to cycle through weapons et cetera, but for Doom and Doom2, I switched things up a little.
I used the default Control to fire and Alt to strafe and Shift to run. Always run. There’s no endurance meter or stamina attribute in Doom2, and there is absolutely no reason to walk in multiplayer. My right hand rested on the arrow keys, and my left hand was aligned as follows:
Pinky finger, always on Control because the faster you can fire, the better.
Ring finger, always on Shift, always holding it down.
Middle and index fingers, hovering above the row of numbers to switch weapons as needed.
Thumb, on Spacebar to activate doors, or on Alt to strafe.
Some general advice, since it’s been a decade since I played that game regularly:[ul][]Keep moving. If you’re ever standing still, you’re dead.[]Learn the map. Know where the weapons are, where the health packs are, where you can escape.[]Remember there’s no falling damage in Doom. If you need to get out of a battle quickly, run off a ledge. Keep in mind, though, that most ledges are above radioactive sludge or lava pits, so you may end up suiciding unless you know the map.[]But the most useful piece of advice may be about the BFG. It can kill someone else in one of two ways - either you shoot them with the big ball, or they get caught in the splash when the big ball hits a solid object and explodes. However, there’s a trick to this - if YOU can see the explosion, and your ENEMY can see the explosion, and you can see the enemy, then he’ll die from the BFG blast. If any leg of that triangle is broken (say, he runs behind a pillar and can’t see the BFG, even though you can still see him) he won’t die.[/ul]
