I found an install of Doom 95 Shareware that will run on my XP machine. I haven’t been able to get Doom II to work or Doomsday to network with XP. While I was courting Mrs. Plant we played Doom II over modem between Arkansas and New Hampshire.
No M16 patch, either. I hate running backwards and popping the demons thrice instead of once with the combat shotgun.
That was one badass game, wasn’t it?
I remember playing a lot of Heretic.
Man, I hated those damn bats!
Not sure it’ll fix your networking issues, but you should be able to run Doom or Doom II in DOSBox. Rip and Tear!
Damn, I was so hoping so very much that this was a thread about Fallout.
DOOOOOOOOOOMMM!!
I still play it and Quake religiously.
Bah. The .223 pistol was way better.
My DOOM skillz got me $50 in a small tournament at a local computer shop.
I remember in the opening round, I owned both my opponents. It was Doom 2 map 7. I had the BFG and I came across the two newbs, freshly respawned, pecking at each other with their pistols. I shot my BFG at point blank and splattered their guts against the wall, and the whole crowd erupted in laughter!
The “final” round was a later level that was very bad for deathmatches. (I forget which one). I found the rocket launcher and camped the main hall for the last five minutes. It was a landslide victory.
Ah, Doom. The game so big you had to download the shareware in four chunks on separate days or the sysop would kick you off.
I think I spent about ninety percent of my teenage years sleeping, watching TNG, and playing Doom. That’s why I’m such a hit with the ladies.
n00b. Campers suck.
I’m down with the yellow key. And I hate those !@#!@ bats.
But when did Adventure get a combat shotgun?!
Or use Zdoom. Or if you want the pretties turned on, Doomsday.
Once you have Doom running on a modern platform,* then get your ass a copy of Oblige for your random doom level generating goodness.**
- Which should also fix your networking problems. Zdoom, at least, is pretty easy to network.
** I play a hell of a lot of this. It’s replaced Slige as my “take a 15 minute break from whatever I’m doing” tool. My only gripe is that the latest update, while adding a lot of cool detail, and fixing a lot of things with the Hexen/Heretic support, also removed the brutal traps and monster ambushes. I miss those.
Doomsday is great, mouse look like a real shooter, but it rapidly loses track of the other player on a network. The latest version I couldn’t get to install.
I remember my first day playing Doom. From a few years playing Mario Bros. I suddenly graduated to putting an imps chest through his back with a shotgun
Infuriatingly it was installed on the day Dad was heading up to an autojumble with me and I’d only just reinstalled the CDROM drive after the lead had come loose in transit. My sister gleefully picked up where I’d left off, Mum didn’t approve.
Yeah, I just threw it in because I knew people would mention it. Personally, you’ll have to pry Zdoom from my cold dead hands.
I just played a little of Fallout before I showed up here. I had to stop, because it’s just to old. I did play Doom a few weeks ago. I didn’t even apply the cheats.
Wimps use cheats. Real Doomers play it all the way through without dying.
Real men kill deathclaws with supersledges.
