Help: artists, art conoisseurs, and Harper's magazine readers

To anyone who reads Harper’s magazine, or who is an artist:

I am trying to locate a book that I read about in Harper’s magazine in the past 6 to 9 months. The book was a mention of a sort of photographic and illustrated encyclopedia of textures, from the natural world, from fashion, etc. Two of the plates reproduced in the magazine were that of a drawing of a coconut crab and an African-american family in Harlem in mid-1985, dressed in the fashion of that time. I found the choice of samples very interesting.

I want to give this book to a friend, unfortunately as I leaf through my back issues from May 2006 to the present, I am unable to locate it. I am missing my July 2006 issue so perhaps it is there. I’m not able to tease the answer out of Google, Harper’s doesn’t carry back issues online, and I haven’t gotten a response from an email I sent them.

So if anybody is still reading and has a remote clue what I’m talking about, please help.
