Barracuda, Heart
Anya Marina: All The Same To Me
For some of these, I’m going more with vibe than actual lyrical content, so if being a pumped up grrl vampire doesn’t do it for you (Concrete Blonde), then I apologize in advance
Anubian Lights - Wild Winter
Bjork - Army of Me
Blue Man Group - I Feel Love (Not exactly a female artist per se – artist just uses a female singer here)
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting
Darling Violetta - Spoiled & Rotten
Delain - April Rain
Delerium - Euphoria (Firefly) (Not exactly a female artist per se – artist just uses a female singer here)
Kosheen - All In My Head
Lizz Wright - Salt
Supreme Beings of Leisure - Divine
Venus Hum - Soul Sloshing
Within Temptation - Faster
Yoko Kanno & Origa - Rise (kind of way out there, but it fits the pumped up/kicking ass criteria)
The song where she gives up all her dreams, loses her shit, tries to kill herself and is institutionalized? Girl Power!
On the more folky side I also like “I Won’t Be Your Yoko Ono” by Dar Williams
I think that means his family jewels are in good order, a good sign!
Eight Miles Wide, Storm Large. You may not want to play this at work.
Not the deepest selections but I’d go with …
Atomic by Blondie
Strict Machine by Goldfrapp
Lots and lots of Kesha. A good place to start is “TiK ToK,” but songs like “Take It Off,” “Cannibal,” and “Backstabber” are also excellent and fit your criteria.
Missy Elliot isn’t rock but I always turn to her for my grrrl power.
Try her song “Slide”.
This thread was worth it for this alone. Oh lordy I laughed …
Very educational so far! So many new things to listen to. Some I liked a lot even though they don’t fit this groove. Some have lead me to other things, even if the original suggestion didn’t make the cut.
And I knew I would probably wind up digging in to some homegirl Ke$ha … heh.
I’ll make final selections and burn the CD tomorrow and post the list. (Yeah, I have a CD player in my car, and only one of the mini-mini iPods. I know, I’m a luddite.)
Wait!
Pink----I’m Coming Out So You Better Get This Party Started
How about “One Girl Revolution” and “Who’s Crying Now” by Saving Jane?
Well this has been a fun exercise. Thanks to those who played the game. Here’s the final list; it starts out a little slow/light, then gets more into that energetic, grrrr vibe. As I said there were several songs mentioned that I liked and have downloaded, besides the ones that made this particular list. So I feel my horizons expanded. grin Plus, there were several that I know and love but just didn’t make the cut, and some I know and love that I hadn’t thought of. So kudos all 'round.
It’s going to be 2 CDs …

You’re that thick? I bet you you think Thelma and Louise is a film about the success of the patriarchy.
You idiot.
Goodness gracious me. I suppose you and Marianne Faithful disagree about the meaning of her performance of the song, then.

You’re in Cafe Society, not the Pit – knock off the insults.
twickster, Cafe Society moderator
My apologies, twickster. I’m used to more abrasive boards. I will be more mindful in the future.
Hello Again, I apologize for, and retract, the insult.
Myself, I don’t believe that the fatalism of the song in any way invalidates it as an expression of assertion. We may just have to agree to disagree.
“Shut Up and Let Me Go” - Ting Tings
“Take Me On the Floor” - The Veronicas
Storm Large (and yes, it’s her real name) is a force to be reckoned with. I think she wrote that song in response to some criticism of her womanly proportions. She’s presently filling in with a touring band called Pink Martini while their lead singer is having throat surgery (we have tickets - huzzah!). Apparently Storm is knocking them dead.
If you really think the song is “Upbeat Positive” and “Feisty” as requested by the OP, then yes, we definitely do.
