Help computer idjit with virus (spyware?) question

On our computer at home we run Windows XP. My wife downloaded some Norton antivirus trialware that eliminated some apparent virii from our system but left a couple behind. I quote from the report the anti-virus software spat out:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
EPFX.EXE is infected with W32.Bugbear.B@mm. (Remains)

and

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gclvgvv.dll is infected with PWS.Hooker.Trojan (Remains).

I seem to remember from other threads of this type that one can sometimes have the empty “ghost” of a virus left in your computer after the program itself has been removed. Is there any way to tell if these two remaining items are active/dangerous?

We are experiencing some weirdness on Startup…the mouse seems to have a mind of it’s own, selecting things without the button being pressed, which behavior I can only end by doing CTRL-ALT-DEL. Also the right mouse button is suddenly non-functional, but I realize that may be unrelated.

Please be kind enough to use teeny-tiny words in your reply and assume a level of computer proficiency you might expect from a moderately sedated orang-utan.

It probably means the file are infected, but are running. As such, Norton can’t clean them.

You need to start the computer in safe mode. IIRC, in Windows XP, you press F8 (press it a lot) when the computer is starting up. You should get a menu on a black screen. Choose Safe Mode.

Now run Norton Antivirus again after it starts up. That should be able to clean the virus.

Thank you, I will try that.

You also have to disable System Restore in Windows XP, or you can be reinfected from the backup file in the C:_Restore folder.
