I am currently suffering with a sinus cold. I want it to go away now. Does anyone have any suggestions on How I could just feel better…I have to work tomorrow, and calling in sick is outta the question, as I had been home for six weeks with a broken wrist.
If you have any remedys that worked well for ya, please share them with us.
Thanks so far everyone…I am wanting to try zinc again. I have some around this house somewhere, can’t seem to find it. (Does it HAVE to be losenges?) My wife used to work at a company that sold vitamins, and such, and she used to bring home stuff like that. My Doctor, however, thinks that the zinc thing is bunk. But then he gets buttloads of freebees and goodies from Pharmacutical (sp?) Reps.
Not to hijack my own thread, but you should SEE the tons of crap the Reps give doctors and nurses. No wonder our medicine prices are so high…
Gotta go find me some hot&sour soup. Actualy congestion hasn’t been the big problem… It is the drip drip drip of the damn sinuses draining…Tried to take a nap this afternoon, and it was like a faucet was on in my nose…I found our zinc… It is in capsules. it’s called chelated zinc. Supposedly more absorbible by the body. I will keep you posted as to its effectiveness…
If I was sick, I’d just wait it out, and make myself as comfortable as I could. Any soup is wonderful stuff, as are large boxes of Kleenex (or whatever facial tissue you fancy), OJ, decongestants, old movies, and any other “good” placebos to make you forget about your illness.
Okay, heres what worked for me:
Drink some wine (not much)
then get in a hot tub.
Sit there a bit, then get out.
Dry off.
Have some spicy food.
It worked for me.
No Cure for colds. Best thing I ever found to do was to think back three days from the time you got it. That is when you most likely got exposed. Think who was around you that might have this virus. Ask them how long it lasts & what they did to feel better.
There are hundreds of cold viruses. This is the only way you’ll know what to do.
Fluids, fluids, fluids! Vit C, and all the stuff your grandma recommended!
Also, good teas from Traditional Medicinals include Throat Coat and Gypsy Cold Care- unlike Nyquil, you can drink them at work have have no ill effects!
Sinus, you said? This may not cure you, but it may make you feel a little better.
Wash cloth.
Very hot water.
Immerse cloth in water.
Fold up wash cloth and place in a plastic baggy (keeps it from getting all over, don’t you know) I usually put that in another dry towel because the plastic can be uncomfortable.
Place it over your sinuses and recline.
Sometimes it feels just as good to put it at the back of your neck.
My best remedy for a cold or flu is hot orange juice. Just put the OJ in a coffee mug and microwave it for about 2 minutes.
Most people think that it sounds yucky, but I swear it isn’t. Heating OJ seems to bring out the sweetness and it tastes really yummy. Plus, it feels so good on sore throat. And, I have always found that drinking hot beverages at least temporally clears my sinuses up a bit.
And, if that isn’t enough to convince you, my grandma says it works.
Tried Zinc lozenges once. Thought they were nasty and they had no discernable effect on my cold symptoms.
My philosophy is to make myself comfortable physically and nuture myself emotionally. Usually this involves:
Put on flannel pajamas, thick socks and fuzzy slippers
Arrange myself on the sofa with the TV on to a mindless program.
Switch back and forth between reading a book and simple activities like color in a coloring book, build things out of legos, play solitaire.
Get BF to fetch me things like hot tea, Cambell’s Chicken and Stars soup, warm gingerale, Kraft Mac N Cheese.
If I can’t skip work, I’ll dress in the most comfortable thing I can find that still passes the dress code (these days the dress code is so flexible, thouggh, that anything short of naked or smelly is acceptable) and take soup and hot tea with me. Do things to get sympathy from co-workers, like exaggerate my stuffy nose.
I doubt any of this makes my cold go away faster, but it sure makes me feel better about the coughing and the snot and the red chafed nose.
My grandmother used to give me spoonfuls of brandy with honey & lemon. I don’t know if it’ll cure your cold or not, but it’s guaranteed to make you feel better. 'specially if you drink a lot of it.
Hot liquids, cozy clothes and good common sense are all very good but don’t overlook the many good drugs we have at our disposal. If you will check the label on most OTC (over the counter) cold preparation, you find the same ingredients in most of them. Pseudoephedrine, chlorpheniramine maleate, and tylenol. These “complete cold medicines” are expensive, even the generic ones are about $4.50 for 40. For the same amount of money you can get separately, 60 pseudoephedrine (generic sudafed) 100 chlorpheniramine maleate (CM), and 50 ibuprofen.
If you are stuffed up, take sudafed
If you are drippy, take chlorpheniramine maleate
If you have a fever and aches, take ibuprofen
I never found zinc lozenges to be very helpful, all they did is put a bad taste in my mouth for about 4 hours.
I firmly believe in the power of vitamin C. Take about 1000 mg (1 gram) twice a day. Nothing works better than CM for the drippies it will dry you right up. If you have a dull headache, especially if it sort of hurts right behind your eyes,(think hangover) you are probably dehydrated. Drink lots of water. Drink some more. Repeat.
Oh yeah, WASH YOUR HANDS. 80% of colds are passed on by hand to hand contact. I’m not making that up.
And for God’s sake, go to bed. Keep your cold at home. Please. A nice furry companion will make you feel better. My dogs KNOW when I’m feeling under the weather and they always sympathize. They never tell me, well last week I was so sick …
