Let me begin by saying that this is fault. I attempted to avoid something unpleasant and it is making my life more unpleasant than if I took care of it myself.
Here’s what happend. I had to sell my car (a POS, low price car). I did not want to deal with any potential buyers. So I gave the car to my roommate for 1 month’s rent. We would then sell it and keep whatever he got for it over the one month’s rent. Then he would send in the relase of liability form. Simple, right?
Well, a couple months after he sold the vehicle, I get a late registration notice. I call DMV, and they say they never got the release. I ask my roommate. He says he sent it in. He also says he doesn’t remember the name of the guy he sold it to. (He usually is on top of things like this, but he started shooting heroin again right about the time of the sale. He’s of no help here).
I tell the DMV that I sold the car, but lost the info ( a lie) because I had moved and had lost several boxes in transit (true).
They say "Well, send in another release of liability, and put somebodies name on it. We need the form to release liability. I do this. I don’t feel good about it, but I make up a phony name and address and send it in.
Several months later, I get a notice that the registration fee has been turned over to the FTB unit (meaining they will garnish my wages and not let me register another vehicle or renew my DL until I take care of it). I also get an overdue citation for a parking ticket and ‘no tags’ ticket from the City of Los Angeles.
What can I do? I would love for this to go away. I would even pay the overdue citation and a fine to the DMV for being a chowderhead. I just want not recieve anything else regarding this POS car.
Anyone know of anything I can do???
